Description	:	Note: although the headstone inscription has 1860 for the DOB year, it appears from most credible sources that Silas was actually born on October 10, 1864 in Brooklyn, NY. Because this burial is in the public grounds section of Evergreen cemetery it is most likely that the inscription was made in error and not corrected. The names of his parents were not listed in any of his obituaries, nor found in any death records in Jefferson county, Iowa. The family surname is most often found as "Jenks", but there are some family members who were listed as "Jinks" in obituaries, but it is likely that those were phonetic spellings. Family researchers should be aware of both versions, however, as the spelling might affect search results. At least one brother is also buried in Evergreen Cemetery: Frank Jenks; Frank is a/k/a Frank Jinks). ---------- Married first to Elizabeth Buchanan on March 12, 1883 (not exactly sure when she died and is buried), then to Dora Burnett on April 18, 1914. JENKS DIED YESTERDAY At His Home 2 Miles West of City; Funeral Arrangements Not Yet Complete Silas Arnold Jenks, age 64 years, passed away yesterday afternoon about three oclock (sic) at his home 3 miles west of the city after having been in ill health for the past year. Complete funeral arrangements have not been made at this time. Mr. Jenks has lived here for the past 15 years. He is survivied by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Lester Barnett (sic) of Batavia, Mrs. Oscar Williams of Packwood, Arnold Jenks of Arispe, Mrs. Basil Messer of Fairfield, Mrs. Ada Steele of Toledo, Ohio and Donald and Lola at home. ----------- Note: the obituary found in the Batavia News on September 13, 1928, Pg. 3 Col. 5., is nearly identical to the Fairfield Ledger September 10, 1928 text. The only difference is that the BN story listed the location of Arnold Jenks as being in Aripe, Ia. while the Ledger story listed it as "Aripse, Ia.". In either case, the correct spelling should have been "Arispe, Ia." in Union county, Iowa.
