Description	:	Silvannah, always called Vannie by her family, was born in 1853 in the village of Jefferson, Illinois (later incorporated into Chicago). Her parents, Nirum and Jane, and their first three children came to Illinois from New York in 1837. A fourth child, probably an infant, died somewhere along the way. Read More	Silvannah, always called Vannie by her family, was born in 1853 in the village of Jefferson, Illinois (later incorporated into Chicago). Her parents, Nirum and Jane, and their first three children came to Illinois from New York in 1837. A fourth child, probably an infant, died somewhere along the way. At that time, Illinois was still considered the frontier. They spent their first winter in a vacated army fort before establishing a fruit farm west of Chicago. Seven more children were born in Illinois; Vannie was the youngest. A sister and a brother died very young from Typhoid in 1842. The children attended school and worked on the farm. Their mother provided additional education for them, including diner-table discussion about books and articles the child were assigned to read. In 1860, Vannie's father Nirum also died. After his death, her mother took the younger children and moved to Wheaton for several years so that the children could attend classes and events at Wheaton College, including lectures and meetings for the abolitionist movement. Later the family moved to Iowa, first to Fayette County, and then after a few years to Chickasaw County. In Iowa, the family split into several households. They engaged in farming, but several of Vannie's brothers also taught school, practiced law, and engaged in commercial activities. Vannie lived with several of her brothers at different times, running their households and helping with their business activities. She also spent two years in North Dakota, helping her brother Scott in his law office and working in the Ransom County Registrar's office, and a year in Minneapolis doing church work. In Plymouth County in 1891, where she had gone to work in a general merchandise business being opened in Akron, she met and married Del Wilson. He was a widower who had lost his two young daughters as well as his wife. As a young man, Del had worked on the family farm in Dubuque County, Iowa. Later he worked as a liveryman and in the grocery business, then managed general stores in several locations. Vannie and Del's daughter Rae, an only child, was born in Akron in 1894. In fall of 1899, the family moved to Millnerville, where Del operated a general store. Rae died in January of 1900, when she was five and a half, after becoming ill while visiting her grandparents in Sioux Falls. After Rae's death, Vannie and Del lived in several places in northwestern Iowa, eventually returning to Akron. Vannie was active in a variety of church activities and organizations, among them the Eastern Star and the Book and Thimble Club. She held offices in and prepared and presented papers to several clubs she belonged to. Vannie and Del continued living in Plymouth County, where Vannie died in 1926. Del died in 1929 in Bettendorf, where he was a patient in a state hospital, but is buried in Plymouth County with Rae and Vannie, and also his first wife and one child. (The other child, Lola, is presumably buried somewhere on the South Dakota side f the river, where they were living when she died.) Although Rae was their only child, both Vannie and Del had siblings who had a number of children who knew their Aunt Vannie, Uncle Del, and their daughter Rae. Their memories of Vannie, Del, and Rae were passed down through both the Wilson and Sanford families.
