Simon Sunderman, perhaps one of the best known men of Noble township, passed away at his home Friday night following an illness of several weeks. For the past two years he has been suffering from diabetes and everything possible that skilled physicians and loving hands could do was done for him, but to no avail. The last couple of weeks his sufferings were severe, but he resigned himself to his Maker and was ready to go. He was the son of the late Simon and Sophia Sunderman and was born near Farm Ridge, Ill., on October 28, 1861. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 73 years, 4 months and 15 days. When he was fourteen years of age his parents left Illinois and located on a farm adjoining the one on which Mr. Sunderman was residing at the time of his death. He was united in marriage on October 5th, 1886, to Miss Alice Adams, the wedding taking place on the Adams homestead in Noble township. They started housekeeping on the farm now occupied by their son, Bert and family, and resided there for 26 years, after which they moved to their present home, which they have occupied for 22 years. Three children blessed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sunderman. They are Albertus and Walter, of Noble township, and Mrs. Ruth Rose, of Grant. These, with the faithful wife mourn the loss of husband and father. There are three brothers, Henry Sunderman, of Sealy, Texas; Fred and John Sunderman, of Griswold; and five sisters, Mrs. Amelia Adams, of Eagle Lake, Texas; Mrs Amanda Gerlach, Mrs. Emma Kearney, Mrs. Mary Havens and Mrs. Anna Herstein, all of Griswold; three grandchildren, Alice Rose, Clifford and Darlene Sunderman, besides many other relatives and friends. Mr. Sunderman became a member of the Masonic Lodge at Grant many years ago and was active in the workings of that order for many years. That he enjoyed the friendship of hundreds of people was evidenced by the many who called at his home during his illiness. Never a day passed but what some came and asked to assist in his care and minister to him. It was one of his great comforts during his last days to know that he had the honor and esteem of so many warm friends. The funeral services were held from St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church in Noble township on Monday. The services were conducted by the Rev. S. E. Birkner, assisted by the Rev. W. C. McKinley. The place of worship was far too small to admit the people who came to pay their last tribute to a departed friend. A male quartet from Griswold furnished the music. Following the services the remains were taken to the Weirich cemetery where members of Centennial Lodge No. 373, of Grant, exemplified the beautiful burial service for a departed brother. Pall bears were Wm. Pelzer, Emery Eshelman., Walter Eppelsheimer, Fred Rose, Clarence Miller and Emil Pelzer. Relatives from a distance included the following: Mr. and Mrs. J.K. Sunderman, Mr. and Mrs Phillip Sunderman, Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Hersberg, Mrs. Enderbrock and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanns, of Clarinda; Mr. and Mrs. Noah Bright and family of Massena.
