Fowler* in Drake's Bay* Some consternation was caused among those interested in sealing affairs by the report that the schooner O. S. Fowler had been sunk in Drake's Bay and many lives lost. This catastrophe right on top of the seizure of two other sealers was quite enough to make owners look frightened. The schooner is owned by William Bendt, and when he was first seen he had not heard the news and was very much alarmed. This report was sent from San Rafael by telegraph. A subsequent dispatch however showed that the affair had been very much magnified although quite bad enough. It appears that a boat of the O.S. Fowler, while going ashore, was capsized in the heavy sea that was running. The mate and two sailors named Thomas Spellman and A. Colwell were drowned. The boat drifted away and has not been seen since. The O.S. Fowler had sixteen seal skins, which she caught after leaving here some time ago. She was waiting in Drake's Bay for provisions and boats. Published Los Angeles Herald February 5, 1889 San Rafael, February 4; Yesterday afternoon, one of the boats of the sealing schooner O.S. Fowler was capsized in the surf at Drake's Bay. Archie Colwell, of San Rafael, Thomas Spellman and the mate of the schooner were drowned. A fourth man, whose name could not be learned, was saved. Parties on shore could hear the cries for help, but no assistance could be rendered. Published Marin Journal February 28, 1889 We met Mr. Robert Ingram of Bolinas yesterday who was just returning from a weary patrolling of the beach from Bolinas to the mouth of Limantour Bay, looking for the body of Archie Colwell. His search was without success. He was assured by all those living along the shore that they will carefully watch the beach and acquaint the friends at once if the body is found. (Two of the bodies have since been recovered.) Published Sausalito News March 1, 1889 The remains of young Archie Colwell have been recovered. Mr. Jesse Colwell has spared no pains or expense to get the body of his son, and though it is a very sad case we are glad to know he has succeeded in his efforts. Young Colwell lived for some time, and was well and favorably known, in Sausalito and his untimely demise is a matter of much regret. Published Marin Journal March 7, 1889 On last Wednesday Judge W.O.L. Crandell went over to Point Reyes to hold an inquest on the bodies of two men washed up on the beach. A coroner's jury was empaneled consisting of H.E. Boosen, R. Ingram, W.E. Read, J. Colwell, F. Miller and F. Trimm, who investigated the facts attainable in the first case, and decided that the corpse was that of Charles Thomas, mate of the schooner O.S. Fowler, and that he came to his death by accidental drowning in Drake's bay on the evening of February 3d. The second corpse was found to be a boat-steerer of the same vessel, who lost his life at the same time. His name was found to be Archie Colwell of San Rafael. Five jurymen certified to the identity, and the father of the young man took the remains to Bolinas and buried them there. Fowler, and who were lost in Drakes Bay, were found last week about one and a half miles from where they were lost. Published Sausalito News March 8, 1889 A very sad event occurred here last week. The remains of young Archie Colwell, which were lately recovered from the sea, were laid to rest in the family burial plot of the Bolinas cemetery. Archie's father buried both his son and Seaman Charles Thomas. Seaman Spellman was buried over 4 months later in Olema, which is north up the road a bit.
