Description	:	SI US COAST GUARD WW II SILVER STAR & PURPLE HEART Rollin was the youngest son of Frank and Mary Fritch. He was born and grew up in Blue Rapids, Kansas. He had three brothers: Ed, Glenn and Rudolph. Three sister: Lillie Moul, Esther Cruso and Elsie Berkey. He moved to his Sioux City, Iowa where he worked at the packing plant. In March of 1942 he enlisted in the Coast Guard. Rollin was on the U.S.S. Callaway on Jan. 8, 1945 when three kamikaze planes tried to down the ship. It hit near by and fire started, which he also helped to try to put out. Rollin and 28 others lost their lives that day and 22 were wounded. Fritch, son of Frank Fritch of Pawnee City: "How he stuck to his post on the signal bridge despite intensive fire and died shortly after his ship suffered a direct hit from a Jap plane during the invasion of Luzon was told by shipmates of Rollin Arnold Fritch, 24, seaman first class, U. S. coast guard, 1661 16th street, Santa Monica. His sister, Mrs. Lillie Moul, has been notified of his death. "Fritch's ship underwent its first attack 10 days before the invasion of Lingayen Gulf and its gunners succeeded in downing the lone Jap raider. Attacks continued periodically during the journey to Lingayen and he was fatally wounded during a raid 22 hours before the beachhead was established. "A native of Blue Rapids, Kan., Fritch attended Sheridan grade school and Pawnee City high school in Pawnee City, Nebr., later becoming an employee of the Cudahy packing company at Sioux City, Ia.. He enlisted at Omaha March 17, 1942, and served at the coast guard training station, on the coast guard cutter Galatea, and at the Manhattan Beach training station. He joined his ship ub September, 1943, and since that time had participated in five other invasions, including Leyte, the Palaus, Saipan, Emirau and the Marshall Islands."
