CARL HANCOCK KILLED IN ACTION Staff Sgt. Carl F. Hancock, 24, was killed in action in France on July 11, according to a war department telegram received today by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Hancock, 1119 Market. Sergeant Hancock had been a member of Company B, 137th Infantry, Emporia's National guard unit, which left January 6, 1941. Sergeant Hancock was born February 18, 1930, in Burlington. He was a graduate of Emporia High school and had attended one year at Emporia State college. Surviving are his parents and six sisters, Mrs. Clifford Peak, Mrs. Harry Conklin and Mrs. O. D. Arnold, of Emporia; Mrs. F. M. Schneider and Mrs. A. J. Coulson, of Burlington; and Mrs. Clarence Watkins, of Long Beach, Calif. ***************************************** The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 05 Feb 1948, Thursday; p.4,c.1 HANCOCK RITES THURSDAY The body of Staff Sgt. Carl Hancock, who was killed in action in St. Lie, France, July 11, 1944, is expected to arrive in Emporia on Santa Fe train No. 3 Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the Roberts-Blue Funeral home at 2 o'clock. The Rev. J. C. Brogan, pastor of the Admire Methodist church, The Rev. E. F. Buck, pastor of the Grace Methodist church, and the Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Maplewood cemetery. Staff Sgt. Hancock was born in Burlington, February 18, 1920, and was graduated from Emporia High School in the class of 1938. He attended Emporia State college until he left with Company B, of 137th Infantry in January of 1941. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation. Surviving him are his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Hancock, 1119 Market; six sisters, Mrs. F. M. Schneider, of Burlington; Mrs. Chester Thorne, of Medicine Lodge; Mrs. O. D. Arnold, 1109 Constitution; Mrs. Clarence Watkins, of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. R. C. HANCOCK Military services for Staff Sgt. Carl F. Hancock. who was killed in action in Saint Lie, France, July 11, 1944, were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roberts-Blue funeral home. The Rev. J. C. Brogan, the Rev. E. F. Buck and Thomas Lowe, American Legion chaplain, were in charge of the services. Burial was in Maplewood. A quartet composed of Roy Hilderman, Gene Kelsay, Robert Anderson and Norman Good sang, accompanied by Miss Irene DeMun. Buglers were Joe Turner and Joe Heath. The firing squad consisted of G. C. Cook, R. H. Hollister, J. M. South, James Millikin, F. J. Wichert, E. R. Ramirez and F. M. Purcell. Color guards were William Obley, John Williams and Bob Corbett, and color bearers were Jack Milsap, Leon Austenfeld and Fred C. Hotzel. Staff Sgt. Robert M. Holt escorted the casket of Sergeant Hancock. Honorary pallbearers were James R. King, Howard M. Deputy, Harold W. Morris, LeRoy D. Brickley, Howard J. Kuhlman, George T. O'Connell, Tom Tholen and Ed Fladung. Active pallbearers were T. R. Sutton, Earl Morray, H. W. Babinsky Jr., Glenn Martin, William J. Preston and Jack I. Frost. Robert Mott was in charge of the escort from Company B.
