Van Ashmore of Villisca is a brother of the deceased. Starl Cool, Ashmore was born November 15, 1884 in Hilland County, Ohio, one of five children born to Asa and Fannie Cook Ashmore. The family moved to Iowa when Starl was a small child, however his mother died soon after their arrival in Iowa and the family was separated with Starl going to work at an early age for first one family and then another. He was married in Villisca Iowa on November 11, 1909 to Laura Ione Sparger, who preceded him in death on April 9, 1952. Starl worked as a meat cutter in Villisca and Creston after his marriage and later owned his own meat market in Villisca. In 1930, the family moved to Greenfield where he was employed as a meat cutter first in the Handley Food Market and later in the Greenfield LockerPlant until his retirement in 1954. He then obtained employment as janitor at the Maid-Rite Cafe and later the Greenfield Bowling Alley at which place he was employed at the time he became ill. He was the father of one son, Meryn LeRoy Ashmore, who died on August 22, 1961. A niece, Norma Hamilton, made her home with the Ashmore’s from the age of 22 months and was loved as a daughter. Mr. Ashmore loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman making many good friends among those who shared this same interest.
