Perrine, One of Big Timber's Oldest Pioneers Dies After Short Illness A week and a day after the burial of his wife, death last Friday morning claimed Stephen A. Perrine, aged 81, one of the earliest residents of this community. Mr. Perrine had seemed to bear up well after the loss of his wife but two days after her funeral he became ill and gradually grew weaker until on Thursday he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he died at 1:30 the next morning. Masonic funeral services were held Sunday, May 19, in the lodge hall with Clive Haas, a past master of the Doric lodge officiating. The members who served as pallbearers were Stuart H. Nicholson, Dorman Kellogg, Lloyd Severance, Karl Bryan, Percy Lavold, and Harold Boe. Stephen Perrine was born in Steubenville, Ohio on October 6, 1864, but spent most of his boyhood in Carrollton, O. He came to Montana in 1885 with the late T. K. (Judge) Lee, a sheep dealer of the Ohio town. They delivered a shipment of rams to a Musselshell sheep company over the newly completed railway line. After employment in the Musselshell country for a short period, he came to Big Timber, remaining for a time in the employ of Mr. Lee here. But soon he established the new town's first barber shop, and this craft became his life-long avocation. He operated his shop in Big Timber for more than fifty years. Stephen Perrine was married in 1889 to Margaret Scott Bailey, sister of Joseph W. Bailey, an early day rancher and merchant. She had arrived here a year after him, and she preceded him in death just 11 days. Both died in the home they built here in 1891, and in which they had lived devotedly together for 55 years. Three sons and three daughters were born to them the first child dying in infancy. All the others have been here with their parents during their last days. The survivors include Stephen Earl Perrine of Oakland, Calif., Mrs. Della Webb of Big Timber, Hal Perrine of Big Timber, Ardis Perrine of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Virginia Barstad of Seattle, Wash. Two grandchildren also survive, Mrs. Sigurd Lavold Jr., of Big Timber and Mrs. Jane Perrine Kersch of Oakland. Calf. Two brothers and three sisters in Ohio survive him. Floyd L. Bailey of Big Timber and Sadie R. Bailey of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Daisy Scyphers of Big Timber are his nephew and nieces. One of the earliest residents of the community Mr. Perrine was widely known through this district. Throughout his long life, he was active in community affairs and had many friends. His deepest interest, outside his family life, was his work in the Masonic lodge of which he was the oldest member at the time of his death. He repeatedly served in all offices of Doric lodge No. 53 and as patron and associate patron of the Eastern Star chapter.
