LeValley of this place, taking away another of the veterans of the Civil War from our midst, as well as one of the pioneer settlers of this county. Mr. LeValley was a son of James N. and Laura LeValley, and was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, March 24, 1834, and departed this life at his home in Dayton March 7, 1915, aged 80 years, 11 months, 13 days. He spent his childhood in the community of his birth, and came with his parents to Knox County, Illinois, in 1857. Here he lived until the Civil War broke out. Prompted by a spirit of patriotism, he enlisted from Henderson, Knox County, Illinois, August 14, 1862, and was mustered into the service at Knoxville September 2, 1862, as a private in Co. F, 102nd Illinois Infantry Volunteers. The regiment was assigned to the first Brigade, Third Division, 20th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. He was promoted to Corporal, later to Sergeant, and then Orderly Sergeant. During the early part of his service, Mr. LeValley took part in a number of skirmishes, but his first important battle was that of Buzzard Roost, followed by engagements at Dallas, Casville, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Marietta, and Atlanta. He accompanied Sherman on his celebrated March to the sea. After the battles of Averysboro and Bentonville, they mared to Goldsborough, where they were stationed at the time of Lee's surrender. He then went with his regiment to Raleigh, where they witnessed the surrender of Johnson to Sherman. At Washington, he took part in the grand review of the Union army, and was mustered out June 6, 1865. After the war, he returned to Knox County, Illinois, where he was married February 1, 1866, to Miss Elmira F. LeValley, who survives him. Seven children were born of their union, Judd N., William, Chauncy C., Mrs. W. I. Umsted, and Mrs. W. A. Snyder, all of this place, Daniel O. of Des Moines and Fred S. of Braman, Okla., who also survive the honored father. There are also twenty-five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. In 1876, he came with his family to Dayton, purchasing a farm southwest of town, where they lived until their removal to Dayton in 1892. He engaged in the meat business in Dayton, continuing nine years, when he turned the business over to his sons, and has since taken the enjoyment that years of faithful activity have earned him. His funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Grace M. E. church, having been a charter member of that organization in Dayton, and serving as its trustee from the beginning. His pastor, Rev. Moore conducted the services, and his remains were laid to rest in Dayton cemetery. Mr. LeValley was a faithful, active Christian man, a kind and loving husband and father, always considerate of the needs of those about him. His face will be missed at the annual campfires, his cheery life will be gone from our streets, but he could say with Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith," as he joins the comrades who have gone on before.
