STEPHAN GILMAN SOWLE Stephen Gilman Sowle was born September 4, 1877 and passed away May 22, 1976 at 8:30 P.M. at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 18 days. He was born in Humboldt, Nebr. to Dr. Decalvus E. Sowle and Lavina McClure Sowle. He was their eldest child. He had one step-sister, Mary Clay Nida and sisters, Lillian Sowle Borges, and Julia Sowle Mosteller. Later they moved to Pawnee City where he received his early schooling. After the death of his father in 1893, his widowed mother and her four children came to live with her mother, Rachel McClure and brother, Ensign McClure on the farm which their grandparents had homesteaded in 1865. This farm received the Ak-Sar-Ben award in 1975, for being in the family 100 years. At the age of 16 he began farming for his grandmother and uncle. He attended the local rural school "East Star" in the winter until he was 18, where he went to school with a neighbor girl, Rosa Bock, who later became his wife. In November 4, 1914 they were married at the home of the bride's parents, Adolph and Laura Bock. In his youth he united with the Pleasant Valley United Brethren Church. He served over 40 years in the East Star school board. He and his wife spent much time collecting pictures of the teachers who taught at East Star during the first 50 years. In 1939 the school celebrated it's 50th Anniversary and these framed pictures were on display. They are still in the family. There were three children born to this union. Esther M., Ruth M., and William G., the latter two children passed away in infancy. On February 24, 1963, his wife Rosa passed away after a lingering illness. In July of 1967 Steve's health failed and he came to the home of his daughter Esther and family to make his home. His chief delight was watching his grandchildren, Stephen H., David E., Wilma R., and Rachel M. Burial was in the DuBois Cemetery, DuBois, Nebraska. (Pawnee Republican, Pawnee City, NE.)
