MORNING-Banker, Farm Owner, County Auditor, Signified Life of Prominent Citizen- The sudden passing of Stephen McKinley Criswell on Tuesday morning at his quarters in the Estes Hotel brings a sense of great personal loss not only to the family, but to his friends who include all who knew him. While Mr. Criswell's health had been impaired, he had in recent weeks gained in weight and in general strength. On the evening preceeding his death he had visited several friends and had called at the James-Reid Funeral Home to pay respects to a departed friend, Mrs. Clevia Masters. In each conversation that evening, he had remarked upon feeling better than he had in weeks. Therefore, the news of his being found dead the next morning came as a great shock. He apparently passed away peacefully about 6 a.m. "Steve" as he was fondly called by old and young, was a familiar figure about Glenwood since 1908 when he moved here from a farm near Strahan upon being elected County Auditor. This position he held for six years, then declined to run again. He stayed for 15 months longer, however, to assist his successor, R. E. Humphrey. Then Mr. Criswell became cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank. Upon its consolidation with the Mills County National Bank, he served a year longer as cashier. Later he was cashier of the Farmers State Bank of Strahan until 1938. Since that time he has led a life of retirement except for brief employment in the County Treasurer's office, the Malvern Trust and Savings Bank and in the Post Office. A man who recognized his civic responsibilities, Mr. Criswell probably placed the church first in his devotion. For many years, he used his splendid bass voice in the choir of the Methodist Church. It would be impossible to estimate the number of funerals at which he sang. He was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School for a long period and was on the church Board at the time of his death. His long affiliation with the Masonic order was celebrated in September 1948, when he was given a certificate of fifty years membership. Mr. Criswell had served several terms on the Board of Education. His wife, Daisy Wolfe Criswell, to whom he had been married 26 years passed away in 1928. Music was an integral part of the life of both he and Mrs. Criswell and was one of their several mutual interests. Mr. Criswell played cornet in the town band for a food many years. Member of a large family of early Mills county settlers, Mr. Criswell inherited his musical talent from his father, who was also a band player. His mother was a distant relative of President William McKinley, which accounted for second of his names-Stephen McKinley Criswell. The relationship of the family with McKinley was enhanced by his father's serving in the Civil War in an Ohio regiment of which President McKinley was the major. Surviving relatives are one son, Paul Meredith Criswell, one sister, Mrs. Agnes Steele of Strahan and one brother, Charles P. Criswell of Omaha. Final rites will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Grace Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Walker and the Rev. H. G. Parker. The James-Reid Funeral Home is in charge. Burial will be in Malvern."
