Funeral Services Held From Malvern M. E. Church Wednesday, September 6. 49 Years in Mills County. The funeral of Mrs. J. S. Criswell, mention of whose death was made in last week's Leader, was held from the Methodist church in Malvern Wednesday afternoon, September 6, at 2:30 and was largely attended by the many old time friends and neighbors of the deceased who knew and loved this good woman during her long residence in this county. Mrs. Criswell had lived in Mills county forty nine years. The services were conducted by Rev. M. A. Gable, a former pastor and friend, now pastor of the Methodist church at Bedford. A special choir, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Talbott, Mrs. F. R. Chantry and Joy Parker, with Miss Estelle Larison as accompanist, sang. A profusion of beautiful flowers testified to the loving remembrance of friends and relatives and to the sweet character of the deceased. The remains were laid to rest in the Malvern cemetery by the side of the husband who preceded her, whither they were borne by the three sons, Robert, Stephen and Charles and three grandsons, Albert Bellwood, Dallas Criswell and Paul Gates, as pall bearers. For nearly a half century Mrs. Criswell had resided in this county at Malvern and near Strahan and few persons have been more beloved and respected by all who know her. Her gently manners, kindly bearing and generous hospitality made the Criswell home a center where old and young alike rejoiced to be. She was a good woman. The following obituary was read at the services: Mary Jane McKinley, second child of Stephen and Jennie McKinley was born in York county, Penn., March 12, 1843. She lived with her parents up to the time of her marriage to James S. Criswell which took place December 15, 1864. Mr. Criswell was in the Union army at the time and they were married while he was at home on a furlough. Mr. and Mrs. Criswell came west in 1873 and located on a farm in Deer Creek township which was their home for nearly thirty five years. Here the family of eight children were reared, and from her radiated a blessed Christian influence, as this home was a center of religious and social life; and true to their training, these sons and daughters have ever taken a prominent place in the social, economic and church life of their several communities. Mrs. Jennie Strohl, Robert W., Mrs. Abbie Bellwood, and Mrs. Mattie Eacrett all live in Malvern. May died in 1914. Mrs. Agnes Steele lives in Strahan, Charles in Omaha and Stephen in Glenwood. In 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Criswell moved to Malvern where the husband and father died October 16, 1909. Mrs. Criswell kept her own home until after the death of the daughter May and since that time has been living with the children, the last three and one half years at the home of her daughter Abbie from which place she passed on to the heavenly abode. Mrs. Criswell maintained her physical vigor to an advanced age, her mind breaking even before her body. She was a devoted mother and the welfare of her children was always her first thought. She rejoiced in their prosperity and was justly proud of their achievements. She always loved her church and was a devoted follower of the Christ, and in her years of strength as a constant attendant upon the means of grace. Under the strain of breaking mind and body the one thought of ‘home' held her attention. She wanted to go ‘home' and oh how blessed it is to know that the Heavenly Father's provision of a home over there will far more than meet her expectations and fulfill the fondest dreams of a weary soul. She passed quietly across the river of time Monday evening, September 4, at the advanced age of 89 years, 5 months and 22 days. Those from a distance attending the funeral were John Criswell and wife of Creighton, Mrs. Lea Lam of Genoa, Nebr., Chas Criswell and family of Omaha, Mrs. Minnie Thoes of Manhattan, Kas., Albert Bellwood and wife of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Dyke Mitchell of Carson and S. M. Criswell and family of Glenwood.
