Watkins, the marriage date can be established as being on March 15, 1881 at Coldwater, Michigan according to the marriage record found for St. Joseph county, Michigan. Stephen and Sarah were divorced on May 4, 1923 in Jefferson county, Iowa, and it appears from those records that the marriage date was stipulated as being in 1881. Sarah initiated the divorce action in the spring of 1923 and after Stephen replied (through his attorney) in a written response the divorce was granted. The filings noted that Stephen had been blind for about ten years, but other factors were involved - beyond the scope of this memorial to detail, however. The divorce papers did indicate that there were ten children born to Stephen and Sarah, and that three were deceased at the time the filing was made in early 1923. The three deceased children are buried in the same Evergreen cemetery. The headstone is toppled over, but it has been partially oriented upright, though not atop the base. ------------------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday August 15, 1928 Pg. 1 Col. 3 STEPHEN O’BRIEN PASSED AWAY This Morning After Long Illness; Funeral Friday At 9 Oclock Stephen O’Brien, age 78 years, passed away this morning at 5 oclock (sic) after an illness extending over a period of three years. He had a stroke of paralysis two weeks ago and yesterday morning suffered another stroke which caused his death. The funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 oclock at St. Mary’s Catholic church in charge of Rev. E. F. Gaule with interment in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. O’Brien was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Moses O’Brien and was born at Mint, Mich., Dec. 24, 1849. He resided on the old home farm until 1899 when he came to Iowa where the remaining years were spent. He was married to Miss Sarah Ellen Ocker at Coldwater, Mich., and to them were born the following children: Mrs. J. W. Ausherman of Miami, N.M., Mrs. Newton Frieberg of Bredette, Mont., Mrs. L. S. McGuire of this city, Edward W. O’Brien of Newton, Raymond R. O’Brien of Lundville, Mont., Victor J. O’Brien of Chicago, Ill., and Dr. Leo A. O’Brien of Kansas City, Mo. Three children have preceded him in death: Teresa Illuminetta, Emma Bernadetta and Cecelia Julia. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Margaret M. Brown of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. Lizzie Holland of Groton, S.D. A brother Joseph O’Brien of Dowagiac, Michigan died about six weeks ago. Friends may pay their respects at the Hoskins funeral home up to the hour of the funeral.
