The original text was published as one continuous paragraph, and the transcription follows that pattern. Obituary: Fairfield Ledger March 2, 1904 Pg. 6 Col. 5 A Pioneer Woman. Mrs. Susannah Pierce (sic. Peirce) Mendenhall was born in Wayne county, Ind., August 23d, 1823, and died at the old homestead in this city Tuesday afternoon, February 23d, in the eighty-first year of her age. The immediate cause of her death was a stroke of paralysis, which occurred a few weeks ago. She was united in marriage to Daniel Mendenhall, who died in 1873, in Wayne county, Ind., August 25th, 1841. The following year they came to Iowa and located at Fairfield, living in a log house on the present site of the Presbyterian church. Since that time she had lived continuously in this city. She was the mother of eight children, four of whom are now living - Mrs. C. F. George, Mrs. S.J. Morris, L. Mendenhall of Fairfield, and Mrs. Anna Hall of St. Louis, Mo. She was converted early in her married life and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and afterwards united with the Free Methodist church, about thirty-five years ago. Until her eye-sight became somewhat impaired, she spent much time in reading religious publications and books and took a deep interest in religious work. While she had been confined at home for a number of years, attending religious services only occasionally, she never lost interest in these gatherings but made diligent inquiry concerning them, in her own church and the special meetings held from time to time in the other churches of this place. She loved greatly the church of God and gave freely of her means to carry on its work. Her charity was not circumscribed by denominational bounds, but she gave to other benevolent objects and enterprises outside of her own church. On her death bed she was very triumphant in her religious experience, and a number of times praised the Lord aloud before she lost her speech. She was peculiarly strong in all those elements of christian character which counted for so much in the upbuilding (sic) of the new community in which her lot was cast. She was a devoted mother, loved by her family and much esteemed by her neighbors and those who personally knew her. Her death means the breaking up of the old home, where her family so often met in happy reunion and other joyous occasions. Truly, a mother in Israel has fallen and another old settler is numbered among the dead. Funeral services were held at the home on West Burlington street Friday afternoon at 2:30, and were conducted by Rev. J. P. Doud of Knoxville. Rev. William Stewart and Rev. Alex. Married Daniel MENDENHALL in 1841; came to Jefferson County in 1842; six (sic)children: Esther A., now Mrs. GEORGE, born Nov. 22, 1842; Sarah J., now Mrs. MORRIS, born Jan. 17, 1845; Lewis (preacher), born Jan. 8, 1852; William, born Jan. 8, 1852, deceased; Mary E., now Mrs. MOUNT, born Aug. 15, 1855; Annie, now Mrs. HALL, born May 15, 1859 (sic. later a/k/a Anna Gard, d. May 6, 1939); and Laura, born Aug. 31, 1862. (sic. note that another child, yet unidentified, was not listed or counted in the above listing - there were eight children born to Daniel and Susannah Mendenhall. It is possible, but unverifiable at this point, that this other child was a son who was born in 1851 and died in 1856. See: Child Mendenhall ) Mr. MENDENHALL was the first gunsmith in Fairfield, and his services in that early day were in great demand. Mrs. M. has been a member of the Free Methodist Church for 30 years, being converted under the preaching of the Rev. Hayden.
