Description	:	Sylvia E. Thorson Fratzke, 88, of Hayes, SD, passed away August 17, 2011 at St. Mary's Health Care Center in Pierre. Funeral Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Hayes at 10:00 a.m. CST with interment following at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 19 at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre, concluding with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Sylvia Eleanor (Haugen) was born June 11, 1923 in Lincoln County to Ole and Tilda (Ulrickson) Haugen. She grew up with her brother, Alvin. She graduated high school in 1941 and wanted to go to college in Vermillion but lack of funds prevented her. She married Omund Martin Thorson on October 23, 1941 on an afternoon drive to Luverne, MN. Their song was "You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine." They lived in the Canton area until a land opportunity brought them to central South Dakota around 1950. They moved away from family with two small boys and found a wealth of friends in the farming and ranching community here. They continued to grow their family and cultivate their land for many years. Omund passed away in 1969. Sylvia was one of God's true good stewards of the land. She was a conservationist who practically coined the term "recycle." She taught her children to save water and pick-up trash, always saving and re-using whatever she could. Staying true to the independent prairie spirit that defined her life, in between chores she watched the wheat grow and the cattle graze. She listened to the wind howl and corralled many a rattlesnake. She loved watching the sun rise and set across the land. She constantly took care of those around her, be it her loving children or stray cats and dogs, and never ceased praying for her family to drive safely. Sylvia married Vern Henry Fratzke on June 16, 1972. Sylvia is survived by her four sons and their wives, Stanley O. and Dixie (Ritenour) Thorson of Hayes, Lyle C. and Linda (Shonrock) Thorson of Pierre, Douglas N. and Mary (Linnemeyer) Thorson of Indianola, NE, Vernon S. and Holly (Glines) Thorson of Ft. Pierre, and one daughter and her husband, Kathleen Thorson-Poss and Dugan Poss of Hettinger, ND. Her grandchildren are Troy, Lance, Sara, Rachel, Megan, Russell, Chris, Jaime, Amy, Lee, Joey, Adam, Meagan, Torrin, McKenna, and Katrina. She has sixteen great-grandchildren and a special neighbor and friend, Tyrel Olson. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, baby sister Ester Darlene, Alvin and Aleitha Haugen, Omund Thorson, Vern Fratzke, and baby great-granddaughter Madison Ann Thorson. The family would like to thank Dr. Dale Viscarra, Dr. Cindy Pochop, the caring staff at 2 North, Sylvia's hospice nurse Jodi Hartmann, the TCU staff, Ambulatory Care staff and Pastor Sarah Goldammer of Lutheran Memorial for their care of Sylvia and comfort of the family.
