Description	:	Theodore T. Poppke was born in Goodrich, North Dakota, on May 10, 1912. He was the eldest child of Theodore and Katharina Poppke. As a young man he worked for the Milton Rue Construction Company as a foreman of the crews installing guard rails along the highway. During the mid 1930's, Ted was in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. Ted Poppke married Margaret Strom on January 4, 1942 in Little Falls, Minnesota. Poppke was born in Goodrich, North Dakota, on May 10, 1912. He was the eldest child of Theodore and Katharina Poppke. As a young man he worked for the Milton Rue Construction Company as a foreman of the crews installing guard rails along the highway. During the mid 1930's, Ted was in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. Ted Poppke married Margaret Strom on January 4, 1942 in Little Falls, Minnesota. They had three children, Joyce, Marilyn and Milton. Ted was in the US Army for less than a year. He received an honorable medical discharge on December 31, 1942. Ted worked in the Richmond shipyards in Richmond, California, as a welder. He opened his own welding Fix-It shop in Point Richmond, California, in 1944. He welded old metal drums for Meyers Drum Company and did auto mechanic work. He had this business through 1949. In the early 1950's, Ted had his own real estate business and was a real estate broker. He and his wife, Marge, also managed a jewelry store. In the 1950's, he changed the spelling of his surname to Popke. He thought it was an easier spelling and his father had said that the second "P" had been added. Ted helped relatives get business experience by training them in his real estate office. He was an inventor in his spare time. He invented a home permanent, TeddiPoint Plan (trading stamps), and vitamins. None were successful. Ted and Marge were divorced in May 1971 in Richmond. Ted retired from real estate and lived at 655 23rd Street. He died on February 29, 1976, of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. He is buried at Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond. My father liked to read about history and read sports articles. He loved to eat steak, chicken, most meats, nepfla, sauerkraut, potato salad, halupsy, cabbage rolls, and loved deserts, especially German strudal, kucken, and ice cream. He sometimes helped with the cooking — made great potato salad and always tried to improve upon it, helped my mother to try to recreate many of the German/Russian dishes his grandmother and mother and sisters had cooked. He didn't like to eat in large gatherings. He had a great sense of humor! Marilyn offered that he was loving and often took us on family outings. My father was a great storyteller—he often told us of falling into the toilet in the out house and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. My father was the head of the household. He taught us loyalty, to be affectionate, generous, and to be a good citizen. Buster remembered our father getting up very early during the winter months and walking to Buster's house, cleaning off his windshield to make it easier for Buster to get to work in the mornings. He remembered our father's love of baseball and collecting old coins. He remembered our father always playing with him, carrying Buster on his back, throwing him up in the air—Marilyn and I remember that, too. He did the same with Marilyn and me. My parents took us to various parks, zoos, and ferry boat rides. My dad was an outgoing person. He was handsome and charming. I remember my dad as having charisma, by his presence, he could stop all conversations when he entered a room. He was a generous and loving person. When I started school, I remember him driving us to school and picking us up on rainy days. He took our family for rides in the country, buying us an ice cream cone or taking us to the family-night movies. He often helped family members and friends. He enjoyed watching sporting events, i.e., boxing matches, baseball games. His favorite tv programs were Milton Berle, the Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason, I Love Lucy, Ed Sullivan, Lawrence Welk, news and game shows.
