Read More	Death Claims a Kansas Pioneer Theodore Gardner, Active in State Affairs, Died Today at 85 Funeral is Tuesday Theodore Gardner, for many years one of the best citizens of Lawrence and the state, died at 8 o'clock this morning at his home, after having been in frail health for some months. For several years his health had been rugged and he had been forced to spend the winters in the milder climate of Florida. He was born November 13, 1844 lacking less than two months of being 85 years old. His father, Captain Joseph Gardner, came to Douglass County in 1855 and took a claim on Washington Creek. In March 1857 he moved his family to Kansas, his oldest son, Theodore, being 13 years old. Joseph Gardner took an active part in the pioneer history of Kansas, being an ardent abolitionist. He was one of a small group which risked their lives in the rescue of Dr. John Doy from the jail in St. Joseph, Missouri. Captain Gardner was later in command of a company in the first regiment of colored soldiers to be recruited in Kansas. At 17 years of age, Theodore enlisted in the First Kansas Battery where he served until the close of the war. During the later years of his life he wrote many interesting articles concerning the early history of the state and among them was "The First Kansas Battery", published in Vol. 14, Kansas Historical Collections. Theodore Gardner and Minnie Selig were married in Topeka, Kansas, March 28, 1872. They had two children, Wilber L., and Miss May Gardner, the latter a member of the KU faculty. For many years Mr. Gardner was a state agent for the National Fire and Insurance Co., of Hartford Connecticut, with headquarters in Topeka, but made his home in Lawrence. He retired from this position about 10 years ago and since has served as Grand Commander of the Kansas GAR and as president of the State Historical Society. Mr. Gardner was a man of high morals and of outstanding character. When nearly everyone used intoxicants he was a teetotaller. A good accountant, he was asked to take charge of the books of Luddington's wholesale and retail liquor business in Lawrence. He answered that he never used intoxicating liquors and Luddington told him that was one reason he wanted him to work for him. Throughout his life he had been a staunch supporter of every temperance movement. The funeral will be held 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at Masonic Temple and will be conducted by Rev. F.B. Shaner rector of the Episcopal Church, assisted by members of the Masonic Order. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Lawrence Journal-World 9/28/1929 --- Theodore's mother's name was Elizabeth "Eliza" Ann Weaver. She was born in 1821 in Union County, Indiana.
