Bernier, 61, of Sewall Street died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born in Waterville, Jan. 12, 1942, the daughter of Leo and Ida (Rossignol) Poulin. Theresa graduated in 1960 from Lawrence High School of Fairfield and married Roland Bernier, Aug. 4, 1962, at the Sacred Heart Church in Waterville. "Mom started her day with a cup of coffee and her morning papers. Once the papers were read, her day would begin. Some of her daily activities included shopping, housekeeping, gardening, and having family and friends visit. She enjoyed collecting, especially Beanie Babies and hummingbirds. She spent most of her time taking care of others, and she loved being there when someone needed her. Theresa had a heart of gold. There are so many people who loved her and prayed for her throughout her illness. Mom was the backbone of our family and taught us what being a family meant. Nothing was more important to Mom than her family and friends. We couldn't have asked for a better Mom for us and a better wife for our Dad. The strength and courage that she showed us this past year has taught us a lot about her, and how to handle the most difficult times that we may face. She adored her grandchildren and they loved their "Memere." "They were her pride and joy." She was predeceased by her mother, a brother, Clement Poulin, and sister, Ina LeBreton. She is survived by her husband, Roland Bernier of Augusta; a son, Michael H. Bernier and his wife Angelia of Bangor, two daughters, Debra L. Bernier of Augusta and Tina M. Esterline and her husband, William of Fairbanks, Alaska; her father, Leo Poulin of Oakland; two brothers, Henry Poulin and his wife Debbie, Joe Poulin and his wife Ruth, all of Oakland. two sisters; Marie Palmer and her husband Lloyd of Columbus Ohio, and Rita Stanton of Waterville, three grandchildren, Brittany Bernier, Renee Bernier, and Alyssa Esterline; special friends, Yvonne Leadbetter of Winslow; and Patricia Enmen of Brewer, several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. Visiting will be from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Friday, Feb. 7, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Horne, 1 Church St., Augusta. A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m . Saturday Feb 8 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Augusta with the Rev. Michael Seavey as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta 04330, or the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St. Suite F, Augusta 04330.
