The sad tragedy call forth expression of deepest sympathy throughout the county and their heartfelt sympathy goes out to the bereaved ones, in their hour of overwhelming sorrow. *************************************** the following contributed by Bill Gransee Posted in the Adin Weekley Argus - December 17, 1925 A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY Last Friday afternoon, (11DEC1925) shortly before the hour of closing school an accident happened which turned out to be a tragedy and took from our midst one of our dearly beloved girls. One of the pupils of the domestic science class was filling an alcohol lamp and had neglected to extinguish the light when the lamp exploded and threw the burning alcohol over several of the girls in the class. Nelda Bassett was slightly burned on her hands, Clara Smith received burns on her face and on arm and Elma Lewis had her face very badly burned. All of these are getting along as well as the nature and severity of their injuries permit; but the bulk of fire struck Miss Theresa Auble instantly enveloping her in a flame. she screamed and dashed for the door and was only stopped when she fell on the lawn in front of the school house when the fire was quickly extinguished by Mr. Williams and Irma Vogt who reached her first. Dr. Tinsman was summoned the unfortunate girl borne on a couch to the home where he wounds were dressed and she was made as comfortable as loving and willing hands could make her. Saturday morning her condition seemed to warrant hope for her recovery, though she was horribly burned from the top of her head to her knees. She suffered much during the day and about three o'clock in the afternoon, under the influence of an anaesthetic, dropped off to a quite sleep. About 6:30 she uttered a slight groan and in a few minutes she has passed from this life (Died 12DEC1925). Her death coming so suddenly and unexpectedly after a season of hope was a dreadful shock to family and friends and the entire community as well. Theresa Rae Auble, known to us all as "Babe" was born in Adin, California, April 9, 1909 an died December 12, 1925, aged 16 years, 9 months and 3 days. She was the youngest daughter of Chas. D. Auble and Mrs. Anne Pickard. She was a bright, attractive, and vivacious girl and the life of any gathering of which she was a part. To say that her death has cast a gloom over the places she was went to frequent is to express the sense of her loss too lightly. there seems a void which nothing can fill, and the entire community have endeavored to show the sympathy they feel for the bereaved family. she was buried Monday afternoon in the Adin cemetery, services being held in the church by Rev. F. A. Manderson. Her bier was covered with beautiful flowers. Members of the high school faculty made the trip to Chico to procure them, and they gave mute testimony of love for the deceased.
