When less than a year old he came to Glasco with the family of his father, Thomas Butler, one of the sturdy pioneers who settled in this community before the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad. Both his father and mother came from Ireland. He attended the old Rock School and Harmony School, also business college in Salina, and he was a member of the famous Glasco football team of the gay nineties which had a statewide reputation for its success. On November 17, 1897, he was married to Anne Louise Hurley, and last fall they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children are Tom Butler, who lives on the Butler farm southeast of Glasco, and Sister Anne Serene of Providence Hospital in Kansas City, Kans. One child, Edna Marie, died at the age of 3 1/2 years. Death came to John Butler on April 20, 1948, at the age of 78 years. His brothers, Martin and Richard, survive him, and his sisters, Mrs. Hugh Reed, and Miss Anna Butler, and his grandson, Robert Lee Butler. John Butler was a quiet man, but strong and industrious and generous and kind. For many years he was a director in the First National Bank, and the community long rated him as one of its leading citizens.
