NELSEN --- Services Held At The Home Sunday Afternoon For Pioneer --- Here For Fifty Years --- Homesteaded Southeast Of Town And Moved To Minden In 1911 --- Funeral services were held at the home in Minden at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, for Thomas D. Nelsen, one of Kearney county's oldest pioneers, who passed quietly away about noon Thursday, aged 83 years, 7 months and 9 days. Mr. G. R. Miller, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiated at the service and burial was made in the Minden cemetery. The singers at the services were Mrs. Arthur Jensen and Mr. Arnold Anderson. Mr. Nelsen was one of those fine men who come to the end of life with only friends in the community in which they live. He has always been a builder. Coming from Northern Europe to America he arrived in Chicago shortly after the great file of 1871 and for two years he helped the masons in rebuilding that city. From there he went to Plano, Illinois, and worked four years in the shops there, helping to build binders, and then in 1878 he came with his family to Kearney county to help build a farming community out of the great plains. He settled on a homestead two miles south and four and one-half miles east of Minden. He cam in company with J. K. Paulsen and P. T. Nielsen, all shipping in a car together. Mr. Nelsen had two horses, a cow and 500 feet of lumber. He arrived in February and a dugout was the first habitation he built for his family in which they lived for two years before they could plan and complete a sod house. He did not have the means to contract the digging of a well, but managed to make a deal with Peter Steen to dig a well while he broke prairie for Steen with his team. There came a day when he had to go to Lowell for supplies. As he was still four miles away on his return journey. he noticed the last fast reddening sky and knew that a prairie fire was racing his way. He urged his horses to their utmost to reach his home where his wife and children were alone. Lars ?orgensen and Mads Jacobsen also came to the rescue, and they succeeded in plowing enough land to save the home, the stock and grain. Only a few chickens were lost, but it was a close race with death and the loss of their few belongings. These are just a few incidents in the life of Mr. Nelsen that the present generation may know the character and courage of the man. In common with the other pioneers he lived though the grasshopper hears, destructive hail storms and droughts, until gradually success came, though industry, perseverance and thrift. Mr. Nelsen was a very successful stock and grain farmer, and was the owner of considerable farm property in this county. he was a pleasant, kindly man, known as a square dealer and highly respected by all who knew him. Thomas D. Nelsen was born in Denmark, January 14, 1845. July 28, 1869 he was united in marriage with Katherine Christensen. To this union were born six children four boys and two girls, who all survive him except one boy who died in infancy. Mr. Nelsen and his wife came to America in 1872, making their home in Chicago until 1878, when they came to Kearney county and took up their residence on a farm six miles southeast of Minden. They made their home on the farm for thirty-three years, moving to Minden in 1911. Mrs. Nelsen preceded her husband in death, passing away at their home in Minden in 1920. Mr. And Mrs. Nelsen were members of the Lutheran church in Denmark and held to that faith throughout life. Mr. Nelsen was active and cheerful and also hopeful until death claimed him. He died at him home in Minden where he had lived so long and in the community in which he had made so many friends. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Chris, Albert and John, two daughter, Mrs. Anna Bayer, of Minden, and Mrs. Mattie Nielsen, of San Francisco, California, twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
