Description	:	Thomas Downey Corcoran Jr, born April 29, 1927 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD to Viola (Schaber) Corcoran and Thomas Downey Corcoran, Sr. Tom was born and raised in Pierre and graduated from high school in 1945. He started working at a very young age, selling newspapers on the streets and selling popcorn at the State Theater, and then moved into the projection booth. He started working at a very young age, selling newspapers on the streets and selling popcorn at the State Theater, and then moved into the projection booth. He joined the army in 1945 and went through basic training in Little Rock Arkansas where he made the Army’s Regimental shooting team. He was sent overseas to Korea in March 1946 for 18 months and returned stateside and discharged in May 1947. He attended the University of Vermillion for 1 ½ years. Tom worked odd jobs before starting with the U.S. Post Office in 1952. He worked his way up the ladder from Sub Clerk to the Superintendent of Postal Operations of the Pierre Sectional Center. Tom married Florence Ann (Krumm) on June 6, 1953 in Emery, SD and they made their home in Pierre. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Robert and Michael. Tom was an active member in the Pierre Kilties where he was a bugler, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Baseball Post #8 (Sergeant at Arms, Athletic Director and Coach), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy Scout Leader and the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department (1943-1978). He was an avid bowler, golfer, hunter and fisherman; bowling a 300 game in 1978 and runner up state golfer in high school. After retiring from the Post Office, Tom formulated and operated a goose hunting operation on Norm Nystrom’s farm. He managed this hunting operation for 22 years until health issues made him give it up at the age of 85. In his words, He “made hundreds of new friends from all over South Dakota and other out of state hunters. Hi to All, Miss You and Our Feathered Friends”.
