"Fletch" Saffell Thomas W. "Fletch" Saffell, 89, of rural Osage City, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, in a Topeka hospital. Mr. Saffell was a mail carrier in the Berryton community 40 years before he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He was born Oct. 7, 1896, at Henry's Crossroads, Tenn., the son of Allen Bryan and Sallie Melinda Wolfe Saffell. He moved from Tennessee to a farm just south of the Berryton Grange Hall in 1914. He was appointed a mail carrier in 1921. He delivered the mail in rural Berryton until he retired in 1961. He moved to the Osage City area in May 1982. As a youth, Mr. Saffell was a noted left-handed baseball pitcher. He played semi-professional ball, including stints with the Topeka Santa Fe ballclub and later with the Berryton club. He was married to Hazel Marie Turning (sic) in 1920 in Topeka. She died July 14, 1959. He was married to Beatrice Mae Johnson April 6, 1961, at Berryton. She died April 29, 1979. He was married to Glenola Holden in May 1982. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Betty Underwood, Berryton, and Mrs. Ann Worthington, Tecumseh; a son, Dr. Thomas F. Saffell, Garden City; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tibbitts-Griffin Highland Chapel. Burial will be in Lynn Creek Cemetery near Berryton. Mr. Saffell will lie in state until service time at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berryton United Methodist Church, Berryton, 66409.
