[Estimated Age at Death: 79 years, 8 months, 25 days] * PITTSBURG — Thomas Frederick Compton, Sr., 79, died Sunday, December 4, 2011 surrounded by his family at his home in Pittsburg following a four year battle with cancer. Mr. Compton was born on March 9, 1932 in Mulberry, Kansas to Emma Retta (Withers) and Frederick Phillip Compton. He graduated from Mulberry High School in May 1950. On October 17, 1951, he married Bonnie Lou Hoop of Mulberry, Kansas. Mr. Compton served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1950 to July 1954.** After his discharge from the Air Force, Mr. Compton and his family returned to the Mulberry/Pittsburg area. He began work on his college degree while also working at KOAM TV/Radio and KSEK radio stations. He worked as an electronics instructor for RCA at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma then returned to the Pittsburg area where he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree and worked for the Vocational Technical Institute at Kansas State College of Pittsburg (Pittsburg State University) for 22 years, first in the Audio-Visual Center and later as an instructor in vocational electronics and related subjects. He was a member of The American Legion and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mr. Compton was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Betty Edwards, and an infant brother, Billy Compton. Mr. Compton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bonnie; four sons, Thomas Jr. and wife Sharon of Pittsburg; William and wife Hwa Cha of Ogden, Illinois; Stephen and wife Dorothy of Harrisonville, Missouri; Michael and wife Mary of Frontenac, Kansas; four daughters, Connie Engle of Overland Park, Kansas; Nancy Smith and husband John of Pittsburg; Rebecca Casey and husband Rick of Pittsburg; Cathy Henderson and husband Allan of Topeka, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include: one sister, Ila Proctor of Southgate, California; 3 nieces; 2 nephews; and many nieces and nephews by marriage. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Bedene Funeral Home in Arma, Kansas. Visitation will follow the rosary until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, December 7 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Chad Arnold officiating. Interment will follow at Rosebank Cemetery in Mulberry, Kansas. Benjamin Fuller Post #64 American Legion in Pittsburg will conduct graveside flag folding services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial fund, the Cancer Center at Via Christi Hospital, or the Mulberry Funeral Dinner fund.
