Cowan, in the 84th year of his age, a resident of Canonsburg for the past forty years, and a well-known building contractor, died at his home, 410 Ridge avenue, last night at 8.30 o'clock. He had been in failing health for a year or two and his condition the last few weeks was considered critical. Mr. Cowan's death further thins the ranks of the surviving veterans of the Civil War. He was 22 years of age when he volunteered for service in defense of the Union, enlisting on August 22, 1861. During the more than three years he was at the front his regiment, the First Pennsylvania Cavalry, participated in the battles of Drainesville, Va., Strasburg, Woodstock, Cross Keys, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Rappanhannock Station, Fredericksburg, Leedstown, Brand Station, Beverly Ford, Gettysburg, Harpers Ferrry, Muddy Run, Kelly Ford, Auburn, Nine Run, Malvern Hill, and several others. He came thru the conflict uninjured. Mr. Cowan was a son of the late George W. and Julia Harsha Cowan and was born at Thompsonville November 30, 1839. He learned the trade of a carpenteer in Washington, and followed that occupation thruout his life, with the exception of the years he was in the army. Even when at the age of 80 years he was able to do a full day's work. In 1860 Mr. Cowan Was united in marriage to Miss Sara Hall of Washington, who died thirty years ago. Three daughters of this marriage survive. They are Ada, wife of A. W. McWilliams; Minnie, wife of W. L. Sheaff, and Margaret, wife of J. M. Donaldson, all living in Canonsburg. A son, Frank, was killed by a train at Connellsviile twenty-one years ago. In 1898 Mr. Cowan was married to Miss Sarah Patterson, who with a daughter, Virginia, survives. He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. N. J. Scroggs, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Fannie Case, Cambridge, Neb., and Mrs. Alice DeFrance, Youngstown, Ohio. Mr. Cowan was a member of Paxton Post, No. 126, G. A. R. ; union Veteran Legion, No. 1; and Chartiers Lodge, No. 297, F. and A. M. He served as a member of the Canons burg Town Council a number of years. As a contractor and carpenter he worked on many buildings about Canonsburg. Until 1883 he resided for many years, near McConnells Mills, moving to Canonsburg in the spring of 1883. Since that time he had made his home in Ridge avenue. Funeral services will be held at the Cowan home, 410 Ridge avenue, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in Oak Spring cemetery. Cowan, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Ridge avenue last evening, June 10, 1923, aged more than four score years. In the War of the Rebellion he was a brave soldier for the Union. A native of the Canonsburg district, he was a citizen of the town for more than 40 years. He was a carpenter by trade, and a good and honest workman. He contracted for and erected many buildings In the town and in the surrounding country. He was a workman of skill; was energetic, and when he was in charge of a contract there was rapid progress. Altho in days of war he was a man who fought to the death the foes of his country, yet he was not naturally of a harsh or a belligerent nature. On the other hand he was as kind as kindness. The editor of The Notes liver neighbor to him always; and in sickness experienced his ability as a nurse, his kindness, his unflagging zeal; his determination to leave nothing undone which might minister to the ease or comfort of the suffering one . He was "a neighbor" in the scriptural sense of the word. But he has gone and has not left his mantle. How could he? Let these Words be his epitah: "He loved and served hi fellowmen.'
