Cox was born April 17, 1885, in Hannah City, Ill., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Walter Cox. At the age of 15 he came to Kansas to live with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gammel at Hartford. At an early age he became an expert mechanic and soon moved to Emporia, where for many years he was a contractor and architects' superintendent. Mr. Cox was married Feb. 29, 1912, to Bernice R. Hoch, in Emporia. He is survived by: Mrs. Cox; two sons, John T. Cox and Runnels W. Cox, of Emporia and two daughters, Mrs. L. A. McAuley, of Emporia, and Mrs. Carl E. Oxelson, of Paradise, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. John Harding, of Peorai, Ill., and Mrs. Harry Washburn, of DeSmet, S. Dak. Seven grandchildren also survive. The Cox home is at 927 South Commercial. Mr. Cox was in the contracting business 46 years. He built many of Emporia's finest homes and store buildings, also many public buildings in Kansas. His first job in Emporia was supervising the construction of buildings on the fair grounds at Soden's Grove. After many years contracting as an indiviaual, Mr. Cox formed a partnership with Veral R. Davis, also of Emporia. Among the residences built by Mr. Cox were those constructed for J. C. Paxton, Mrs. Justin Soden, M. L. Kretsinger, J. C. Dumm, Jud Allen, Thomas W. Butcher and E. C. Crofoot, in Chase county. The Stratford apartments also were erected by Cox & Davis. Many buildings in Emporia's business district and surrounding area were built or remolded by Mr. Cox and his associates. They include: the Fanestil Packing plant, Reeble's south side grocery, the Sheeley Bakery, The Heritage, and Newman hospital nurses' home. In 1945 Mr. Cox formed a partnership with his sons under the firm name Tom J. Cox and Sons. Among their building projects were: Matfield Green school, remodeling the of the Haynes building in Emporia, First Congregational church, addition to the First Presbyterian church and additions to schools in Moline and Melvern. He also was a member of the county zoning board. Mr. Cox's services were in demand not only in Emporia, but outside this area. He erected schools at Blue Mound, LaHarpe, Westphalia, Ellsworth and Iola, and was architects' supervisor at the new Maynard school, the grade school at Eskridge, the old New Process Laundry building and the addition to the Reading high school. The Westphalia school, destroyed by fire, was rebuilt by Mr. Cox. In 1931 Mr. Cox purchased the home of Mrs. Justin Soden on South Commercial, which he converted into an apartment house. He erected other buildings on the tract. Mr. Cox in his spare time followed his hobbies of hunting and fishing and made many trips to western Kansas to hunt ducks and to South Dakota for the pheasant seasons. Cox, 927 South Commercial, who died March 23, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Presbyterian church. The Rev. Robert L. Moreland, pastor, conducted the services. U. C. Brown sang, accompanied by Mrs. Catherine Perkins. Pallbearers were Orville Hoch, Tom Ford, R. A. Batson, Noah Peach, L. A. McAuley and Pat Sanders. Honorary pallbearers were Charles T. Miller, Calvin H. Lambert, Glenn Bybee, R. A. Hoch, Verl Davis, Clayton Reeves, Albert Grosz, Henry Kemper, Ira Lister and Stanley Hagan. Burial was in Maplewood cemetery. Out-of-town persons attending were Mrs. Carl Oxelson, Paradise, Calif.; Mrs. Etna Gamble, Mrs. Edna Shaw, Glenn Bybee, John Brown, Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Sanders, Blue Mound.
