DIED YESTERDAY Retired Meat Packer Had Been Ill For 2 Years The community was saddened for the third time this week on Thursday morning when it learned of the death of Mr. T. Jefferson Webb, Sr., after an illness of two and a half years. Mr. Webb's death was the third in less than a week of three of the city's older residents. Mr. Webb was the son of the late John and Mary Cottman Webb of the Cokesbury section where he was born 86 years ago. He came to Crisfield as a young man and established what later was to become the Webb Packing Company and the largest meat packing establishment on the Eastern Shore. In cooperation with his son, T. Edward Webb, this business was built up into a large and profitable organization starting from a small retail store back in 1886. He retired from active interest in the business in 1940. "Jeff" Webb was a name that became famous throughout the county for his honesty, his good fellowship, his ability as a business man, his ability to grow flowers and his love for those flowers, his love for his family, and for his honest political convictions. He was an active force in Democratic politics in the county and served several terms on the Democratic State Central Committee of this county. He had many accomplishments and many talents that were unknown to but a few that came in close contact with him. He was a student of the history of the War between the States and was probably the best authority on that history from the Confederate side of anyone in the county. He studied this history diligently and was often called upon to settle arguments. He believed in States Rights and without losing any of his loyalty for the Nation remained a "Rebel" until his death. For many years he traveled the county in the interests of his company and during that time built up a wide friendship of business men in the county. His word was one thing that could be depended upon, though plain spoken at times, you knew that whatever he said was sincere and that was the way he felt about things. He would never have made a diplomat as he could not be pleasant when it called for plain words nor could he evade an issue regardless of how much it might hurt him. A member of Immanuel Church for many years, he was a faithful member of the congregation and was regular in his attendance until ill health forced him to remain in the home he loved so well. He was twice married, his first wife and the mother of his children was Mrs. Hettie Byrd Webb, who is deceased, and he re-married his widow, the former Mrs. Jennie Hayman Long. Funeral services will be held Saturday from his late home at 2:30 P.M., conducted by the Rev. John Wooten of Snow Hill and Dr. J. Yancey Fincher. Interment will be in the Sunny Ridge Memorial Park. Friends may call at the home at any time. He is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs. C. L. Dickinson, T. Edward Webb and Granville Webb of Salisbury, Murray Webb of Wilmington, Del., Miss Elsie Webb of Washington; Mrs. Littleton Sterling and Mr. T. Jefferson Webb, Jr. of Crisfield.
