Hummel, born on February 2, 1930 passed to a peaceful place on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the age of 81 years and 4 months at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Thomas was born to the parents of Thomas Mitchell and Goldie Floyd (Coppock) Hummel in Westfield, IA. He attended school in Westfield until the 11th grade. Hummel, born on February 2, 1930 passed to a peaceful place on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the age of 81 years and 4 months at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Thomas was born to the parents of Thomas Mitchell and Goldie Floyd (Coppock) Hummel in Westfield, IA. He attended school in Westfield until the 11th grade. He received his diploma in 2009 (we are so proud he got it!). He enlisted in the military (Army) on October 21, 1952 during the Korean War. He was discharged on October 20, 1954. He married Virginia Alice Groves on February 18, 1956 at the Riverside Methodist Church in Sioux City, IA. During their married life, they lived in Vermillion, Jefferson and Elk Point, SD. To this union, 4 children were born: Twyla, Shirley, Thomas R. (Little Tom) and Vickie. Virginia passed away on April 4, 2010. Thomas was a jack-of-all trades. He worked at International Harvester as a diesel mechanic, Auto Electric, different construction companies, drove school bus, worked at Curry Seed and M/S Machine Co., and was also a hobby farmer. He belonged to the United Parish church in Elk Point, and the VFW Post #915 in Elk Point, where he held the position of Commander for many years, and many offices in district VFW. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #3 AF&AM of Elk Point – holding many offices, the Scottish Rites Consistory in Yankton, Al Bekr Shrine in Sioux City, IA, the Order of the Eastern Star in Elk Point and Vermillion – holding many offices, the Order of the Odd Fellows and the American Legion – both of Elk point. His loved ones that will miss him forever: his children, Twyla (Terry) Kjose of Alcester, SD, Shirley (Keith) Sorge of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Thomas R. "Tommy" (Kym) Hummel of Jefferson, SD, and Vickie (Bruce) Fowler of Sioux City, IA; his grandchildren and great-grandsons, Jeremy (Krissy) Kjose, Michael and Seth Kjose of Beresford, SD, Jose, Raymond, Darsie, Anna and Tim Sorge of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Tony (fiancée Alicia Folker) Hummel and Devin Hummel and great-grandson Evan Hummel (Devin's special friend Amanda) of Jefferson, SD, David and Ashley Fowler of Sioux City, IA; his sister, Sylvia Rosenbaum of Elk Point, SD; his brother-in-law Glen (Marlene) Groves of Le Sueur, MN; his sister-in-law, Kesy Groves of Sioux City, IA; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his godson, Kerry Graves; and his dog Susie. He is preceded in death by his wife: Virginia; his parents, Thomas M. and Goldie Hummel; his brothers and their wives, Earl, Lynn (Clementine), Gordon (Margaret), and Floyd (Ruth); his sisters and their husbands, Mary Jane (Harold) Rosenbaum, Verda (Elwood) Klapprodt; his brothers-in-law Robert Rosenbaum, Gerald "Jerry" Groves; his parents-in-law, Raymond and Opal (Troubaugh) (Solomon) Groves; his step-father-in-law, Rufus Solomon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Kober Funeral Home, Elk Point. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm followed by Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Odd Fellows rites. 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Kober Funeral Home - Elk Point 802 East Washington Street Elk Point, SD, 57025 Memorial service will be on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at United Parish at 10:30 am with Rev. David Bambas and Rev. Tanya Sherrill officiating. 10:30AM at United Parish 603 South Pearl Street Elk Point, South Dakota, 57025 Burial of ashes will be on Tuesday, following the service in Westfield Cemetery in Westfield, IA at 1:00 pm. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Elk Point VFW Post #915 and Elk Point American Legion.
