Whealton, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this community, passed away at his home in Asbury at 6 o'clock last Monday evening, after a lingering illness of several months. Mr. Whealton had been in declining health for about a year, yet his death came as a grave shock to the residents of this section. Mr. Whealton was born at Pocomoke City seventy-nine years ago, but moved with his parents to Asbury, two years later. Since that time he has made his home here, and has been prominently identified with the interests and growth of this section of the county. In early life he filled the capacity of public school instructor and also served one term as a Judge of the Orphans Court for Somerset County. He was better known, as a Justice of the Peace, having served in that capacity for more than forty years, and retiring from office only two years ago. Mr. Whealton was familiarly know as "Squire," and was one of the best posted men in the laws of our county and state, living in this section. The deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs. M. C. Whealton; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Sterling of Crisfield and Mrs. J. S. Wharton, Jr., of York, Pa.; and two sons, Messrs. Harry and Gordon Whealton. Funeral services were held at Asbury M. E. Church, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. H. Daschiell, and interment was made in Asbury cemetery. A native of Maryland, he was born 1 Mar 1835, the son of William Hickman and Harriet L. Ward, both of Maryland. His occupation was listed ex-Justice of the Peace. He was married at the time of death.
