They were the parents of Bernard J., Lucille, Thomas, Leonard, and Jeremiah. Sept 25, 1936 - Carroll Daily Herald - Thomas A. Madigan, well known Carroll county farmer, was found dead in bed at his home northeast of Maple River about 7 o'clock Friday morning by his son, Leonard. Mr. Madigan's death was not entirely unexpected as he had been subject to serious heart attacks for the last two years. He had felt ill Thursday and had spent the day in bed, but his condition was not alarming. The day before he had been as well as usual and had made a trip to Carroll. The body is at the Gregory Funeral Home from where it will be taken to the family home Friday evening. Funeral arrangements have not been completed at this time. Mr. Madigan, son of Thomas B. and Margaret Madigan, was born near Pittsburgh, Pa., June 11, 1863. When he was a small boy his parents moved to Moultrie county, Illinois, where he received his early education. In October, 1882, they came to Carroll county to reside on their farm east of Maple River. With his parents Mr. Madigan did his share in pioneering on the prairie as much of the land was in a raw state when the family came to this county. After attending the Carroll high school, Mr. Madigan entered the Northern Illinois Normal and Business college at Dixon, from which he was graduated. For many years he taught in the rural schools of Carroll county. On Feb. 12, 1900, he was married in Carroll to Miss Hannah Murphy. Their wedded life was spent on their farm northeast of Maple River where they were living when Mrs. Madigan died eight years ago. After his wife's death Mr. Madigan continued to live on the same place. Mr. Madigan was a successful farmer and was active in community affairs. He served as clerk of Maple River township for a great many years. He was a member of St. Joseph's church and was interested in its various departments, including the Holy Name Society, of which he was a member. Surviving Mr. Madigan are five children: B.J. Madigan, county recorder, Mrs. Louis Renze (Lucille), Thomas W. Madigan and Leonard Madigan, all of Carroll and Jeremiah Madigan of Omaha. He also leaves four grandchildren. Mr. Madigan was the last of a family of ten children, four of whom: Michael, Mary, Margaret and Mrs. James Ryan, were Carroll residents. A sister, Ellen, Sister Mary, who had celebrated the golden jubilee of her religious profession, died at Springfield, Illinois. A brother, John Madigan, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away about two years ago. Sept 29, 1936 - Carroll Daily Herald - Funeral services for T.A. Madigan, who passed away Friday morning, were held at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joseph's church and were largely attended. Out-of-town relatives at the rites included Daniel Madigan: Miss Gertrude Madigan and Mrs. Mary McDermott of Lake City, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy and the former's sister, Miss Johanna Murphy, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Murphy and Dan Ryan of Rockwell; and Charles Murphy of Gilmore City. The requiem mass was read by Rev. T. Perrion, chaplain at the St. Anthony hospital, and burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery. Mr. Madigan's death followed that of his wife by exactly eight years and two months. Both were found dead in bed, their deaths being caused by heart attacks.
