Read More	Nora was the daugher of Thomas Madigan and Margaret Morgan. She married James Ryan on July 1, 1874. They were the parents of Mary, Margaret, Timothy, Daniel, John, Nellie, and Florence. Nora was a sister of Thomas Madigan of Carroll. March 25, 1920 - Carroll Times - Mrs. James Ryan, nee Nora Madigan, was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, March 28, 1854, and died March 14, 1920. When a little girl she spent much of her time among beautiful scenes in the Alleghenies, often picking berries and gathering wild flowers on the mountains. At the age of thirteen, she emigrated with her parents to Moultrie county, Illinois, which place was then in its pioneer days. She could tell most interesting tales of the building of the cabins and rail fences, and the constant fear of the venomous rattlesnakes. In 1874 she was married to James Ryan at Decatur, Illinois. Because of the malaria in that country, they came here to Iowa in the fall of 1882 when much of this state was still prairie. They settled on the farm west of Carroll on which place she has resided with her family till about three weeks ago, when she was taken to St. Anthony's hospital. She never saw her new home here in town, to which place she was taken after her death. Mrs. Ryan was a model wife and mother, never considering a sacrifice too great for those whom she loved. Since coming to Iowa, she has never enjoyed the best of health. However she did her duty among her neighbors and friends to the best of her ability. For the last three months, she was a constant sufferer from heart trouble and dropsy, never having one hour's relief at one time from pain. She retained consciousness to the last, addressing her friends and relatives about her by name. Her death was a most happy one. She died with a smile on her countenance. She was devout member of the Catholic faith. The funeral was held from St. Joseph's church Wednesday at 9 o'clock. Rev. McCarty preached a most fitting sermon. Among the large attendance at the funeral were her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Madigan, of Lake City, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Rickers, and Mrs. H. Buck, of West Side.
