Description	:	Thomas O. Bentley, a pioneer of Haakon County, died Jan. 9, 1952, at St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, SD, at the age of 68 years and 9 months. Mr. Bentley was born April 27, 1883 at Bryant, SD the son of early pioneers of eastern SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church, his home congregation. In 1907 he came to western Dakota to homestead with his brother George. They established the Grandfield post office and store. Bentley, a pioneer of Haakon County, died Jan. 9, 1952, at St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, SD, at the age of 68 years and 9 months. Mr. Bentley was born April 27, 1883 at Bryant, SD the son of early pioneers of eastern SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church, his home congregation. In 1907 he came to western Dakota to homestead with his brother George. They established the Grandfield post office and store. With the departure of many of the homesteaders, the need for the post office decreased and in 1917 it was closed. For 45 years his main occupation was ranching, in which he took great pride. In Jan 1917 he married Ida Marie Sandal of Moenville, SD. Five sons and five daughters were born to this marriage. They are Orville, Wooster, OH; Kenneth, Chadron, Nebr.; Richard, Midland; Mrs. Gladys Pugh, Pierre; Mrs. Dorothy Nelson, Sioux Falls; Mrs. Alice Gambrel, Colorado Springs, CO; Curtis, Norma and Susie at home at Moenville. Another son Evan passed away in 1944. There are 10 grandchildren. Besides his wife and family, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Clara Teeter, Albert Lee, MN; Mrs. Bertha Anderson, Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. Johanna Stime, and Mrs. Gurina Marcuart of La Jolla, CA. His parents, a brother, George; and a sister, Anna preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Church on Sat. Jan. 12, with burial in the Deep Creek Cemetery. Pastor Walla of Midland officiated and the Dotson Funeral Home was in charge. The choir members were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Noble and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Pegelow of Midland. The active pallbearers were five brothers-in-law, John, Pete, Arthur, Roy and Walter Sandal and Melvin Sandbo. Honorary pallbearers were James Puryear, Thor Fosheim, John Schanzenbach, Peter Fosheim, Sam Hilmoe and Julius Roseth. All the children were present for the service but one daughter, Gladys (Mrs. Merlyn Pugh) of Pierre, who gave birth to a daughter in the St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. T. O. Bentley would have observed their 35th wedding anniversary on Jan. 27th. The death of Mr. Bentley takes a loving husband and father from the home, a good neighbor and friend and a faithful member from the Deep Creek Congregation of the Church. The large crowd that braved the stormy day and snowy roads to attend the funeral spoke the esteem in which Mr. Bentley was held. Sympathy is extended to the sorrowing family in their bereavement.
