Mikkelson, 65, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away early on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at his sister's residence in Elk Point. He was a blessing on earth for 65 years. Tom was an amazing man, putting others before himself, kind and generous, grateful for his blessings and strong in his faith. He demonstrated his love for God and his family in everything he did. Tom was born on Oct 20, 1950, to his adoring parents, LeRoy and Darlyene Mikkelson, their first child of 5. He attended Lamont Country school and Elk Point Public School, graduating in 1969 with classmates he forever held dear to his heart. He had fun working at Bellas Hess and in his off time, racing his cars at Thunder Valley. He graduated from Western Iowa Tech and began a 40 year career as a machinist at Prince Hydraulics in Sioux City. He lived most of his years in Union County, the last 38 in Elk Point. Growing up on the farm, he learned the value of working hard. Tom could take that hard work, combine it with his devotion to his family and his zest for life and turn any dreaded, large scale project into a picnic, literally. From cutting trees in the fence line or scooping wagons-full of corn cobs to burning ditches or splitting wood for Grandpa, it wasn’t work with Tom in charge, but a fun get-together involving a tailgate picnic, plenty of iced tea and lots of laughs at break-time. He was a very active, lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran church, serving God in whatever capacity he was needed, be it as a Sunday school or Bible school teacher, an usher, a deacon or making quilts for the missions. His enthusiasm would light up a room when he volunteered for committees and that light continued to shine as he tended to his duties, be it selling tickets to the lutefisk dinner or loading the dishwasher at the Friends Feast. This gentle man cherished every child he met and it showed. Where he was, so were the kids. He had a special place in his heart for the Youth Ministries Bible Camps of Lutheran Outdoors in SD. Months in an advance, his calendar was boldly marked with his volunteer schedule at Outlaw Ranch in Custer and Joy Ranch in Watertown. They appreciated his help with the horses and working start to finish at their annual quilt auction. No task too big, even constructing a larger than life balloon horse for Joy Nelson. He wholeheartedly enjoyed the company of all the youth, young adults and leaders that he generously gave of his time and talents. Tom was a dedicated fan of the EPJ athletes; Only dire circumstances could keep him from a game. He enjoyed treating the teams to malts at Ollie’s after a game. He appreciated small town living and knowing his neighbors. No one was a stranger for long. Sharing the joy in his heart was natural for Tom. Every Meal On Wheels he delivered came with a warm smile and a sincere “Have a wonderful day!” In his visits to the hospitals and nursing homes, he could find a positive viewpoint for each situation and share it with compassion. Never with expectations but just for the simple delight of it which seemed to feed his beautiful soul. A true outdoorman, Tom loved being out in God’s nature, feeling the sun shining on his face and breathing the fresh air. Especially, up on the Brule Creek and the Big Hill where he’d “set a-spell” and take it all in, sometimes confessing to takin’ a little snooze before he checked his traps. His nieces and nephews loved to hear of his trapping adventures on the creek and Ralph the raccoon. Tom participated in many rendezvous with his mountain-man persona, perpetuating the image of that pioneering era in American history. Tom carried that on with appearances and educating youth hunting and trapping safety in the schools mini courses. Tom loved being a part of the Lewis and Clark Re-enactment in Elk Point. Immediate friendships were formed with other participants and would join their frontiersman clubs. “Tom-Tom” was a member of the Cherokee Ridge Runners, Buckskinners and SD Trappers Association. Those taking comfort in knowing that the Lord set a place for Tom at His table include his siblings, Leo (Sheela) Mikkelson, Jefferson, SD; Sally Balkevich, West Bend, WI; Ruth (Steve) Bartek, Elk Point, SD and June Mikkelson, Vermillion, SD, one aunt, 6 nieces, 3 nephews, 12 great nieces & nephews, many cousins and many, many friends. His love for the history of the American Frontier and the Mountain-man, his devotion to God and his fun zest for life are all represented as we lay his ashes to rest with his bible and supplies in his possibles bag and a good friends powderhorn. His beautiful soul has journeyed to the ultimate rendezvous in the Kingdom of his Lord and Savior. 1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.
