Tom was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Thomas "Buff" Griggs and Annie Sue Griggs on October 1, 1933. He attended Cheraw public schools, was a graduate of Wingate College, and held degrees from both Duke University and Limestone College. Tom worked in the Radiology Departments at McLeod Regional Hospital where he retired after over 25 years of service, and at Marion County Medical Center where he retired after over 20 years of service. He was a former director of the South Carolina Radiologic Society . He was instrumental in starting the Radiology Program at the former McLeod Hospital in Florence, SC and later continuing the program at Florence-Darlington Tech. Tom owned and operated Rosewood Manor Bed and Breakfast and Catering in Marion, SC. He was instrumental in working with the South Carolina Parks and Recreation Department to form the Bed and Breakfast Association of South Carolina in 1992. From the beginning of the association, he served faithfully in several positions including President, Vice President and District Director. Mr. Griggs was a member of Marion First United Methodist Church. He was the organist for Marion Episcopal Church of the Advent. He was an accomplished musician, serving as a board member of the Marion County School of Music and was a charter member of the Marion Music Club. Tom was Executive Director of the Arts Council of Marion County. He is survived by his children, Verna Bumgarner of Salisbury, NC; and Cindy Bass of Florence, SC; four grandchildren: Josh Bumgarner of Salisbury, NC, Rebecca Bass of Darlington, SC, Katie Bass of Florence, SC, Will (Krista) Bass of Florence, SC; one great-grandchild Madalyn Bass of Florence, SC; his brother Bobby (Judy) Griggs of McBee; sisters Gwen Dickerson of Wolcottville, IN; Betty Sue (Phillip) Staley of Millers Creek, NC and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie (Helen) Griggs of Cheraw, SC. Memorials may be made to Arts Council of Marion County (MarionArts.org), PO Box 1608, Marion, SC 29571; American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org), 7021 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212; or to the Autism Society of North Carolina, 505 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC 27605. Tom Griggs had a contagious love for his community and enjoyed giving back to the place he called home. He had an immense love for his family, adored his two girls, was the best grandfather you could ask for and was very blessed to be able to meet his great-grandchild. He touched so many lives over the years, particularly through teaching and his service in the medical field. He graciously opened his home and heart to all and will be greatly missed. To quote a friend from Rosewood Manner guestbook in 1996, "Tom Griggs is a southern charm." And he always will be.
