McKenzie, county assessor and former mayor and postmaster, died suddenly at 8:30 Saturday morning at the family home, 216 Ninth Street. He is survived by his wife and little son. Death came quickly and without warning. He rose as usual in the morning, ate breakfast, spent some time in the garden, chatted with neighbors, talking for a while with Lou Lucke over the fence. He went into the house to wash his hands and depart for work. As he stepped into the bathroom he fell forward, clasped in the arms of death, which had come instantaneously. Mrs. McKenzie found him a few moments later. While Mr. McKenzie had not been feeling in his usual good health for some time, he did not consider himself sick and to the suggestion a few days before that he see a doctor did not deem it necessary. Thomas William McKenzie was born at Shakopee, Minn., Nov. 10, 1870, only child and son of Angus William and Betsy Chisholm McKenzie. He acquired public education and attended high school at Shakopee and later mastered the profession of carriage painter. He followed the trade as a journeyman in St. Paul, Chicago, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and in April 1896 arrived in Havre, Montana. For a while he continued to work at his trade. Then he became a clerk in a local drug house, and finally established a business in that line. He was one of the merchants of the city until 1906, when President Roosevelt appointed him postmaster. He was reappointed for a second term my President Taft in 1910, gave an able administration of the Havre Post Office for eight years, and was again appointed on March 11, 1920 for a four year term. In 1914, Mr. McKenzie became one of the organizers of the Havre Natural Gas Company, serving as its first general manager. He was elected mayor of Havre in April 1916, and re-elected in 1918, serving two terms. He was appointed county assessor upon the death of J.T. Matthews and last fall was re-elected. His term of office would have expired January 1, 1929. Mr. McKenizie was one of the state's most progressive citizens and took an active part in public matters. During the world war he was a leader in patriotic activities incident to supporting the government, particularly in liberty loan work. He was a member of the A.F. and A.M., Masons, Scottish Rite, Havre Elks, Assinniboine Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Mrs. McKenzie was Miss Margaret Auld, daughter of county commissioner, James Auld. Their wedding was solemnized February 14, 1917.
