He was born in Narbo, Norway, February 10, 1864. When he was 18 years old, he came to the United States and settled in Valley City. He was united in marriage to Guri Bjorheim on December 23, 1889. Thomas (Thore) Gudmestad, Sr. passed away at the Mercy Hospital in Valley City on Friday morning September 3, 1954 at the age of 90 years and 6 months. He was born in Narbo, Norway, February 10, 1864. When he was 18 years old, he came to the United States and settled in Valley City. He was united in marriage to Guri Bjorheim on December 23, 1889. In 1901 they moved to their farm west of Litchville where he lived until he retired. Mr. Gudmestad was active for many years in local, county and state affairs. He served as school board official and county commissioner and was a state representative for two terms. He was a charter member of the Marion Lutheran Church. At the time of his death he was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Litchville. Mr. Gudmestad lived a full lifetime of over 90 years. During his lifetime he enjoyed good health almost all of the time. In recent years his legs bothered somewhat so he was unable to get around, but his mind remained keen and sharp until the last. In the early years the Gudmestad farm was one of the first farms in our community to have nice buildings. Thus this was one of the outstanding farm homes in the early period. Mr. Gudmestad was a pioneer with foresight and faith in North Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sons and one daughter. The survivors are: three daughters: (Emma) Mrs. Chris Olson and (Belle) Mrs. Frank Satterlee both of Litchville; (Cary) Mrs. Oliver Severson of Seattle; and three sons: Thomas Jr., of Casselton; George of Litchville (on the pioneer home farm) and Sven of Minneapolis. Also 28 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren survive. Funeral services were held at the First Lutheran Church at Litchville on Monday, September 6th, with Rev. E. K. J. Kristensen officiating. Special musical numbers were by Jack Donovan who sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Behold the Host Arrayed in White." He was accompanied by Mrs. Dennis Anderson at the organ. Burial was made in Bethlehem Cemetery, which joins the Gudmestad farm on the northeast. Pallbearers were: Clarence King, Haldor Opperud, Louis Skretting, Herbert Satterlee, Alfred Sandness and Axel Formo. Honorary pallbearers were: P. F. Satterlee, R. B. Monson, John Formo, Gilbert Berg, T. I. Strinden, Chris Haarsager, Anton Olson and Melvin Olson.
