Ray: Ray was the third of five children born to Oscar F. and Clara P. Ray. Raised on the family farm, he quit school to join the Maryland National Guard. His first duties were to patrol the East Coast of the United States for German sunmarines. He then went to work as a crewman on bomber missions in Europe with the 492nd Bomber Group. He was one of the senior crew members in part because he had turned down a promotion to lieutenant in order to stay with them. The week prior to his death, he was aboard a plane shot down in enemy territory, but escaped with the help of some French citizens. A week later, he was the engineer among nine crewmen aboard a B-24J Liberator that departed North Pickenham, England, on a mission to bomb a German aircraft factory near Bernburg, Germany. It crashed near Westeregeln, about 20 miles northwest of the target in what would become the Soviet sector of a post-war-divided Germany. In 2001, a group of German citizens interested in recovering wartime relics and remains learned of a potential crash site south of Westeregeln. Later that year and in 2002, the group found the site and uncovered human remains from what appeared to be two burial locations. The remains and other personal effects, including identification tags, were turned over to United States officials. In 2003, a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) team excavated the crash site and recovered additional remains, identification tags and non-biological material evidence. Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of the remains. In 1945 he was declared dead by the United States Army. At that time his father erected a headstone in his memory at the cemetery. In October 2007, Ray was laid to rest in that plot. He was survived by his two sisters, Thelma M. Kristian and Kathryn Brazezicki.
