Carroll County had not yet been settled, and but few of the Easterners knew of its fertility, its potential water power, or timber. Jones County was being settled rather rapidly and this band of pioneers stopped there. There was a boy in this company who had been born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1850, Uriah George Coder. About the time Coon Rapids was being founded, this young man came on west to Carroll County and decided to cast his lot with the few families that centered about the mill on the "Coon" river. In what became the village of Coon Rapids, there were probably less than a dozen homes, but the land was being settled rather rapidly. On December 24, 1874, he and Miss Sarah Ann Hampton, who lived near what is now the town of Dedham, were married and begin building a home. There was no railroad closer than Glidden, many of the houses were made of logs, a water-powered grist mill was the only industry in the little village. Mister Coder worked at the carpenter trade when his farming did not keep him at home. Some of the oldest houses in this section of the county were constructed by him and his helpers. This sturdy pioneer and highly respected man died here Sunday just short of his 90th birthday. Three sons, all of whom survive their father, came to bring happiness into the home and as soon as they were old enough to help out with the farming, Mannie, Otis, and Clarence. There are also eight grandchildren, one adopted grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Coder preceded her husband in death of July 5, 1937. Two daughters came into this home, one Myrtie, died when she was but two years of age, the other Elnora, Mrs. James McMullen died 1933. Mr. Coder lost his eyesight some ten years ago. Although he has lived these last years in the dark he never lost his cheerful spirit. Some months ago his health began to fail and Sunday morning he slipped away. Could he have lived five more days he would have been 90 years of age. Memorial services were held for him at the Coder Funeral Home Wednesday, April 10. Lewis Huff and Dale Textor sang at the services. Mrs. J. Thos. Rogers played a number of the older hymns for the organ prelude and postlude. Rev J. H. Krenmyre give the address using as his theme: "Builders for Eternity." The sons and grandsons bore the body to its last resting place in the Coon Rapids cemetery and placed it beside that of Mrs. Coder.
