Stratford Courier March 12, 1936 Obituary Van Iles Judge Van Fossen Iles, a son of the late John and Elizabeth Southard Iles, was born in Yell township, Webster county, Iowa, on May 13, 1863, and pass this life at his home in Dayton, Iowa, at the age of 72 years, 9 months, 13 days. He was reared to young manhood in the Bellville community in Yell township. On Nov. 16, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Elzada Bowman of Stratford, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Fay, now Mrs. J.W. Conklin; Fern, now Mrs. Harry L. Smith; Clarice, who passed away on Oct. 1, 1929; and a son, who died in infancy. He also leaves four beloved grandchildren, Mary and Daniel Conklin, and Van and Katherine Smith. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Leona Deck of Stratford, the following brothers and sisters having passed before: Mrs. Alice Fuller, Charles, Alexander and Fred Iles and Mrs. Bertha Girdy. The parents of Mr. Iles emigrated to Iowa in 1854 from Ohio. They first settled near Burlington, then came to Brushy, in Webster county for one year, and then to Yell township, where the remainder of their lives were spent. Van Iles had played the drum since about the age of eleven years. He was a member of the National association of Civil War musicians. In his young manhood, he taught school in connection with farming. Although he never joined a church, he was a true Christian. He spent his whole life in this community, excepting for one year in Missouri. He moved to Dayton in 1925 and has since lived among us. Mr. Iles took a deep interest in the affairs of his home community and in the state and national affairs and was active in his community activities, trusted and respected by all who knew him. Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon from his home in Dayton, conducted by Rev. Watson Herrold of the M.E. church. His remains were taken to Stratford and laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery, north of that place. He led a life worth while among his neighbors, who will ever remember his kindly and courteous friendship. - Emory A. Rolfe in The Dayton Review.
