She was born April 22, 1916 in Adams Township, Defiance County, daughter of Joseph M. and Clara V. (Hornish) Bishop. On June 30, 1939 she married John Howard Rittenhouse at the Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, Defiance, OH. They were blessed with four children: Roberta “Bobbie” (Lynn) Stuckey of West Unity, OH, Karen (Ronald) Wyse of Camden, MI, Barton (Kathy) Rittenhouse of Defiance, OH, and Dale (Linda) Rittenhouse of Napoleon, OH. Veda has 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Veda’s siblings and spouses, all deceased were: Charles and Gertrude Bishop, Ray and Marie Bishop, Wayne and Bonnie Bishop, and Naomi Pelland, Blosser, Otte all of Defiance, OH, and Alta and Lou Mayle of Fort Wayne, IN. Veda attended one room schools in Adams Township for eight years, and Jewell High School where she graduated with honors. She sang in many vocal contests and choral groups in her early years. She was a member of Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, Defiance, OH, where she served a number of years as Sunday School teacher, chorister, and in women’s work. Her husband Howard got Polio 10 years after they were married, and the children were small. She cared for Howard for 33 years until his death July 24, 1982. She worked as clerk at the Defiance Co. A.S.C. office, at Woolworths in Defiance, and 27 years at Zeller Corp. of Defiance, retiring in 1979. Veda married Caleb Disbrow on November 24, 1984. They spent winters in Bradenton, FL. While in Archbold in the summer they attended Lockport Mennonite Church near Stryker, OH. Their marriage ended in 2005. Veda lived with her daughter Karen at Lake Diane, Camden, MI, for over four years, attending Salem Mennonite Church. She moved to Hillside Country Living, Bryan, OH, in September 2009. She was active in churches wherever she attended. Visitation will be at Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren, Domersville Road, Defiance, OH on Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 9-11 a.m. with the service to follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ben Polzin and Pastor Dee Custer officiating. Burial will be at Poplar Ridge Cemetery on Adams Ridge Road, Defiance. Memorials can be made to the church or to the Gideons.
