She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Lester, her stepmother, Mame Husmann Tuetken Schofield; and a step brother, G.L. Tuetken. Velma Schofield was born June 1, 1915 near Langworthy. She was the daughter of Charles Rufus and Amy Burlingham Schofield. Velma graduated from the Monticello High School in 1933. She then taught at the Finn School in rural Linn County. Velma Schofield and John Sanford were married Dec. 28, 1937, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Monticello. Velma worked at the Reliance Shirt Factory, Westphal's Grocery, and the Ben Franklin Store, all in Anamosa, for many years. Velma loved to crochet and do crossword puzzles.
