He departed this life on Sept. 3, 2012 at ParkView Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at 82 years He was baptized on Aug. 31, 1930 at St Peter Lutheran Church by Pastor Leo Hoefer. He was confirmed in both German and English at St. Peter Lutheran Church on May 28, 1944 by Pastor Hoefer. His memory verse is Matt: 24:13 (But those enduring to the end shall be saved). He departed this life on Sept. 3, 2012 at ParkView Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at 82 years He was baptized on Aug. 31, 1930 at St Peter Lutheran Church by Pastor Leo Hoefer. He was confirmed in both German and English at St. Peter Lutheran Church on May 28, 1944 by Pastor Hoefer. His memory verse is Matt: 24:13 (But those enduring to the end shall be saved). He was a life time member of St. Peter. He served on the Church Council and was a Sunday School Superintendent. His grade school years were at Lone Star School, District 75. He graduated from Byron High School in 1947. Verdell married Leora Kettelhut on March 25, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church with Pastor A. A. Krause officiating. They were blessed with three children. He was a farmer and they lived on two different farms before retiring to Byron in 1991. He raised cattle, hogs and sheep and loved going to livestock sales. He loved playing baseball and pitching for the local teams. Besides farming he had a variety of other jobs. He loved to hunt, make up songs or poems, listen to country music, vacation in AZ. and spend time with his family, grandsons, and great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Marvin Freitag, a sister-in-law, Hildreth Freitag, and brother-in-law, Willis Gass. He is survived by his wife, Leora of Byron, two sons: Don Freitag and wife DeEtte, of Holdrege, Lonny Freitag and wife Jan of Byron, daughter, Evonne Williams and husband Bill of Omaha, NE. One brother: Orin Freitag and wife Deanna of Fremont, NE., two sisters: Adalene Schlueter and husband Arlen of Superior, NE., Fern Wittke and husband Gene of Byron, NE. One sister-in law, Anita Freitag of Twin Falls, ID. Eight grandsons: Chaplain Michael Freitag and wife Amy of Kearney, NE., Dan Freitag and wife Tonya of Holdrege, NE., Matthew Freitag and wife Mandy of Omaha, NE., Nathan Freitag and wife Stacey of Huntington, PA., Benjamin Williams and wife Michelle of Omaha, NE., 2ndLT Thomas Williams USMC, Quantico, NJ., 2nd LT. Samuel Williams, US Army, Okinawa, Japan, and Cpl. Robert (Max) Williams, USMC. Iwakuni, Japan. Four great-grand children: Makenna Freitag of Huntington, PA, Aiden and Erin Freitag of Kearney, NE., and Reagan Williams of Omaha, NE., many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service will be Friday September 7, 2012 at St. Peter Lutheran Church Rural Byron, NE at 10:30 am, Pastor Myron Meyer officiating, visitation will be Thursday September 6, Noon to 7 PM with family greeting friends 7-9 PM. Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Byron, NE, memorials in lieu of flowers to the family,Deshler Memorial Funeral Home of Deshler, NE is in charge of arrangements.
