Description	:	Vernon Fredrick Gordon, 71, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 6, 1998 at his home on his 71st birthday after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held today, June 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Timothy R. Schott will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa with full military honors by L.A. Wescott VFW Post #2253. Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of the arrangements. Read More	Vernon Fredrick Gordon, 71, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 6, 1998 at his home on his 71st birthday after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held today, June 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Timothy R. Schott will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa with full military honors by L.A. Wescott VFW Post #2253. Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Gordon was born on June 6, 1927 in rural Meriden, Iowa to Walter Sr. and Mabel Munster Gordon. He attended school in Meriden, graduating in 1945. He farmed with his father until 1950 when he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. On March 2, 1951 he married Betty Mangels Willert at the chapel on the base. He was transferred to San Antonio, Texas where they resided until the illness of his father and gained his release to aid on the farm. He farmed the home place until 1958. He began working for Farmers Hybrid and farmed 80 acres near Cherokee. After 33 years with working the company, he retired in 1990. He enjoyed his large garden and sharing it with family and friends, enjoyed yard work and helping his son-in-law on the farm. His family was his main enjoyment and he always had time to help anyone in need. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee where he served as an usher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Betty; four daughters: Pam and her husband, Terry Harrmann, Dubuque, Iowa. Joanne and her husband, Jerry Massengale, Aurelia, Iowa; Jeanne and her husband Richard Ravnsborg, Quimby, Iowa; and Nancy and her husband Norm Hill, Sutherland, Iowa; a granddaughter Angela Smith, Dubuque; five grandsons: Chris Smith, Dubuque, Marc Rupp and his wife, Carrie, Elk Point, South Dakota; Brian Rupp, Elk Point, South Dakota; Jason Ravsnborg, Quimby, Iowa; and Jeremy Massengale; Aurelia, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Trent, Cole Michael and Nicole Rupp; three sisters Mabel and her husband, Bob Parrott, Aurelia, Iowa; Voneta "Tiny" Gill, Meriden, Iowa, and Liz and her husband Lyle Curry, Des Moines, Iowa and three brothers: Kenny Gordon, Cherokee; Bill Gordon and his wife Cheryl, Cherokee and Walt Gordon and his wife Judy, Meriden. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Bonita Lavin.
