In August, she celebrated her 94th birthday with her family and friends. Veva was born at home August 5, 1923, in Hill City, SD, to John Oliver and Medora Alice (Morehouse) Davis. She was their fourth child and the “baby” of the family. She often spoke fondly of the character and perseverance her parents demonstrated, and shared many happy childhood memories with her much loved siblings. As a teacher and school administrator, her father moved their family to several small communities in the Dakotas before settling in Fargo, ND, for her high school years, where she graduated from Fargo High School, in 1941, and attended Business College to become a bookkeeper. Duty called as WWII escalated and Veva headed out west, where she found herself working for the Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle, WA, and Juneau, AK. She married her first husband, John Lockwood Metzgar (1919-1979), in Seattle. Her first child, Mandilee “Mandy” was born in Wenatchee, WA, after the young family moved to Chelan, WA, following the war. Her marriage to John dissolved and she moved with Mandy back to Hill City, SD, where her parents resided. She met and married Calvin O. Belmont. Veva then had five more children with Calvin. Claton the oldest, Laurie, Ginger, Minet and her “good son” Copeland. While living in Hill City, she was the president of the PTA and an active member in the community. Due to economic condition, the family moved from Hill City to Chelan, in the fall of 1966, where Calvin found employment at the box factory and saw mill in Manson, WA. Veva had various jobs in the Chelan area including: packing apples, cleaning the telephone office, bookkeeping jobs, working at area hotel resorts and handling the Seattle Times newspaper distribution in Chelan and Manson. While her kids were young, she often worked nights so she could be home with her children during the day. In later years, her grandkids recall laughter filled hours spent rolling paper-route quarters around the dining room table after one of the many weekend family potlucks. Veva was an avid square dancer, even learning to call square dances and served three terms as Secretary and one term as Vice President for the North Central Washington Council. She was also a very politically active person who loved her country. As her character was forged in the trials of the Great Depression and WWII, she was a proud patriot and unabashed member of the “Greatest Generation”. She loved singing, and swimming, taking her last dip in Lake Chelan at age 92. Veva was also a fun and loving grandmother and great-grandmother, always welcoming new members to the family, through marriage or birth, with open arms! Veva loved family and community functions and could often be found organizing a picnic or impromptu family dinner at home, the lakeside, or in the hills. Her home was a warm place of gathering for her family and friends. Her vivacious spirit and faith brought her through good times and hard, leaving an unforgettable legacy for all those she touched in her life. During her retirement years, Veva was married to Howard Burns, until that union dissolved. She then moved to Antoine Creek, where she lived out her years next to family and enjoyed the peace and beauty of country life. These were some of the best years of her life until, in her words, “somewhere along the way I got old”. Veva is survived by her children; Claton (Alice) Belmont of Wenatchee, WA, Laurie Kemper of Chelan, WA, Ginger Ewing (Tim) of Manson, WA, Minet (Lori) Belmont of Chelan, WA, and Copeland (Jody) Belmont of Richland, WA; plus 20 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; 9 nieces and nephews; and her cousin, Georgia Ann Morehouse Thomas. Veva was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Mandy; sister, Alice E. (Davis) Smith; and brothers: Copeland G. Davis and Howard E. Davis; nephew, Ron Smith; and son-in-law, David Kemper. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Teresa and staff at Rosewood Cottage for their excellent care of mom. Veva’s life will be celebrated Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 12:00 noon, at North Shore Bible Church, 123 Wapato Point Parkway, Manson, WA, with a reception to follow.
