She passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 13 days. She grew up and attended rural schools around Oak and graduated from Nelson High School in 1925. April 12, 1933, she married John Q. Johnston in Oak. That union was blessed with one son, John, and one daughter, Donna. They lived in the communities of Oak and Nelson. Viola moved to Nelson Good Samaritan Center on January 19, 2001. Viola worked at the Nelson Good Samaritan Center for 13 years. She was the main babysitter in Nelson and also stayed with people in their homes when they were ill. She was best known for her chocolate cookies and fried chicken. No one ever left her house without a bag of cookies. Viola was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She especially enjoyed getting together with her family and relatives. She always had a smile and good word for everyone. She loved her home. She always said "She had the best spot in Nelson." Preceding her in death were her parents; husband John in 1956; brother, Fred Kotas; and two sisters, Mamie Jensen and Lillian Jensen. Those left to mourn her passing are one son, John Johnston and his wife Jeanne of St. Charles, Missouri; one daughter, Donna Fishel and her husband Charles of Loveland, Colorado; five grandchildren, Bill Meirath and friend Rhonda, Peggy Shockley and husband Byron and Marc Fishel and wife Stefanie, all of Loveland, Colorado, Curtis Baron-Fishel and wife Janice of Greeley, Colorado, and Becki Johnston of Chester, Nebrasa; 10 great grandchildren, Zeb, Sara, Lance, Alex, Hannah and Noah Shockley, Mariah Fishel, David Fishel and Neotha and Katie Meirath; one sister, Mildred Holst of Davenport; and one brother, Joseph Kotas of Nelson. Services were 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Music was "One Day at a Time" and "In the Garden" with Tom Jensen as soloist. Burial was in Edgar Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Meirath, Zeb Shockley, Lance Shockley, Curtis Fishel, Steve Rakosky and Marc Fishel. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
