Memorial services were held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller. Walter Gene Benning was born December 20, 1928 near Rockham, South Dakota to Walter C. and Lois (Goeken) Benning. He lived with his parents on a farm for four years. His father passed away and his mother and family moved to Miller where he spent the rest of his life. On October 26, 1952 at the Presbyterian Church in Miller, Gene married Janice Vivian Zemlicka. Janice later passed away August 2, 2006. Better known as Gene, he attended grade and high school in Miller, graduating in 1947. He then began his lifetime career in Retail and Meat Department business, owning his own store for some time. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Past Master of the St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge, No. 39, where he was a 50 year member, past member of the Miller Fire Department and charter member of the Miller Country Club. Gene was a friend of everyone he knew; a helper and devoted to many. He loved fishing, hunting, and all sports. Gene is survived by a brother, Roger of Florida; sister, Marilyn (Morrie) Lane of Arizona; niece, Bev (Gene) Labor of Miller; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers: Quentin and Marvin; and niece, Karin Bassinger. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
