The Barton Clan by Betty Barton Eggers and Ethel Christensen Our story or history begins with Walter Hogan Barton, our grandfather and one time editor of the Eagle Reporter in Maywood. He was born February 6, 1869 in or near Lostant, Il. where he spent his boyhood days and received his education. His parents were Gilbert and Olive (Beede) Barton. He married Grandmother, Sylvia Elect Fairachild, July 24, 1890 in Tonica, Il. She was the daughter of Hiram and Martha (Poston) Fairchild. (Sylvia Rucker was named after Grandmother) During their early years of married life they operated a hotel in Tonica. Grandpa also worked as a building contractor in Chicago, Il. and was later employed by the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Tribune. The children born were: Lelia Dale, June 23, 1891 at Harvey,Il., Gilbert Walter, on July 9, 1893 at Lostant, the twins, Ina Venessa and Emma Lucile, on July 11, 1896 at Harvey. They lived to be a year and a half and died in 1898, Ina Venessa on March 5, and Emma Lucile on March 8, Elmer Laverne, a son, was born that year on April 26, and died at birth or shortly after. They were living in Lostant and Grandpa was publishing a newspaper, the Lostant Reporter, at the time of the twins' death from diphtheria and every one was so afraid of the disease that the towns people were afraid to do business with them, and so the newspaper failed and they had to sell it. The family then moved to Nebraska in 1898 and homesteaded in south Lincoln County, where Eugene Emmerson was born on February 10, 1900. When asked how old he was, he would say "same as the year" meaning forty-four if the year was 1944. Grandmother Barton (Sylvia) used to tell of living in a sod house and how the wind would blow sand all over everything. How she hated it. Snakes would get in the house which worried her the most. She was always worrying about her little children. And then there were always coyotes and other predators after the livestock. It was a rough and lonely life. Grandpa (Walter) had to take part-time jobs elsewhere in order to buy the things they needed. He wasn't home much. In 1901 they moved to Maywood where he established the Maywood Reporter and later sold it to N. H. Bogue who published The Maywood Eagle. The family then moved to a farm north of Wellfleet where they spent two years. Two more children were born, Olive Mildred on June 12, 1903 and Verna Elaine on November 11, 1906. They then moved to North Platte in 1908 where he published the Lincoln County Journal. They returned to Maywood where he worked for W.B. Votaw two years. Grandpa Walter then in 1910 became owner-publisher of The Eagle Reporter which remained in the family long after his death. Uncle Eugene (Gene) took over the running of the paper at the illness and death of his father, Our Grandfather, on November 18,1938. Grandpa's early career as a "newspaper man" began when he was twelve years of age when he published a paper he called the "Lostant Quiz." It seemed W.H. Barton was not happy unless he had printer's ink on his hands. He always took great pride in community events and was a very conservative politician. Sylvia Barton passed away June 13,1954. She spent several years with her daughter in Chicago where she resided at the time of her death. The five children of Walter and Sylvia Barton finished growing up in Maywood. Eugene and the three girls, Leila, Olive and Verna all graduated from Maywood High School. Gilbert got as far as the eighth grade, but then dropped out. Later his son Gerald had the same teacher in the eighth grade that taught his father, Gilbert. Leila, the eldest, married Del Hoschouer. To this union were born six children: Ethel Reilla, Lyle Dellroy, Kenneth Barton, Sylvia Dale, Minnie Marie and Delma Harlene. Leila worked off and on in the print shop nearly all her life, mainly as a reporter. Gilbert Married Violet Wilson of North Platte. His wife died when the youngest of his five children was about a year and a half of age. Grandparents, Walter and Sylvia cared for them. Eugene Emmerson did not marry until late in life. He married Bunny and she passed away a few years later and he married Ethel. Uncle Gene had no children. Eugene followed in his father, Walter's, footsteps being a newspaper man from an early age. He took over publishing the Eagle Reporter after his father died. He printed it for several years until he sold out to the Curtis Enterprise. He then moved to Chicago, Il. where he worked for the Chicago Sun for many years until his death in 1972. Olive married Raymond Langen, another printer from Chicago. They became parents of four children: Theresa, Betty Lou, Edward Raymond, and Rae Marie. Verna, the youngest, spent her entire early years working in the Eagle Reporter Print Shop. She married Cleve Hoschouer, a nephew of Dellroy Hoschouer, in 1935. They move to Chicago where she owned and operated a Beauty Salon. They had one son, Walter Barton Hoschouer. Both have passed away. After Aunt Verna died Uncle Cleve married again, a school teacher. All five of the Barton children are gone now but the mark the Barton family left on the community will live on for many years.
