Description	:	Walter McKinney died in the early morning hours of 10 April 1916 in a fire at the Fremont jail, where Walter was a prisoner. Walter's short life was filled with tragedy, and his death was likewise. Walter was born on 24 August 1881, the son of Franklin and Josephine Merryfield McKinney. Josephine died when Walter was a young boy, and many people believed that losing his mother at a tender age had been the cause of Walter's troubles. Walter's short life was filled with tragedy, and his death was likewise. Walter was born on 24 August 1881, the son of Franklin and Josephine Merryfield McKinney. Josephine died when Walter was a young boy, and many people believed that losing his mother at a tender age had been the cause of Walter's troubles. Walter married Fannie Carter in 1907, and the couple had three children. But Walter took to drinking and soon was out of control. For a time, Walter farmed, but he soon began working as a day laborer. Walter's employers believed he was a hard worker, but his alcohol addiction remained his demon. On the night of 09 April 1916, Walter began drinking and bothering people in the town of Fremont. He ended up at the livery barn owned by the Roquet family and demanded a ride out to the country. Mr. Roquet refused and called Marshall Ollom, who took Walter to jail. No one knows how the subsequent fire broke out, but most suspected Walter started the fire himself. It was a sad end to a life full of potential. Walter's wife, Fannie, remarried shortly after his death to a man named Henry Saner/Sainer.
