Death following an ambulance interurban accident near Harcourt, Iowa, Sunday abruptly ended attempts to restore health which were being made by two Cherokee county residents, both of whom expected to enter University hospital at Iowa City as patients. A third patient from this county who was on her way to the hospital escaped from the accident with minor injuries. Miss Mary Johnson, 47, now of Cherokee and formerly of George, and Walter Wright, 43, of Larrabee were killed; Grace Haburn, 16, of Washta was injured as was driver of the ill-fated ambulance, W. A. Wallen of Iowa City. Wallen collected the three patients, one of whom was an emergency case, and was on his way to Iowa City Sunday morning when the ambulance he was driving collided with a locomotive on a diagonal interurban track near Harcourt at about 9 a.m. Both the driver of the ambulance and the interurban motorman, H. S. Hardie of Fort Dodge, were said to have realized that an accident was inevitable a second before it occurred. Hardie applied brakes and threw the car into reverse, burning out the motor. Wallen, too, is said to have attempted to cut his speed. But the two machines collided, totally wrecking the ambulance and burying all four passengers in the debris. Harcourt residents heard the crash and rushed to the scene of the accident. All four victims were taken to a hospital in Fort Dodge, where about 1 o'clock the same afternoon Mr. Wright and Miss Johnson died. Miss Johnson moved here from George and has been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. W.A.B. Carpenter, 429 East Spruce street. A fractured skull, fractures of both forearms and the lower left leg caused her death at 1:10 in the Lutheran hospital at Fort Dodge. Mr. Wright, a farmer in the Larrabee vicinity, was being taken as an emergency case to the University hospital. Military funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Appleyard and Boothby funeral home in Cherokee for Walter Wright, 43-year-old Larrabee farmer. Acting as chaplain was Rev. W. O. Dailey, pastor of the Church of Christ. Burial was made in Afton Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, four children, father and a brother. Miss Haburn, the third passenger, suffered severe cuts and bruises, but her condition was not serious, physicians said. The bodies of Miss Johnson and Mr. Wright were both brought to Cherokee in an Appleyard and Boothby ambulance. Dr. H.T. Larsen, Webster county coroner, was called to investigate the accident. The new Iowa highway patrol sent another Cherokee county resident, Mark Flannigan of Marcus, to investigate for that group. University hospital authorities, officials of the interurban company and relatives of the ambulance driver soon gathered at the scene of the wreck.
