The same document indiates his future wife was living nearby. On 2 Dec 1850, having paid-in-full the price of $50 to the Land Office in Vandalia, Illinois, Washington received his official patent (#15815) from the U.S. Government recognizing him as owner of a 40 acer track of land in Fayette County, Illinois in accordance with the 1820 Public Land Sales Act. The exact location was described as, "the north west quarter of the northeast quarter of Section twenty in Township seven north of range three east; in the district of lands subject to State at Vandalia, Illinois containing fourty acres." On December 18, 1851, Washington was united in marriage to Catherine Ann Hines in Fayette County, Illinois. The Township name was changed to, "Avena" that same year. In 1870, they lived in Saint Elmo - a small town in Avena Township, Fayette County. In 1871, Washington and Catherine moved to Adams Township in Harrison County, Missouri. In June of 1880, the US Census recorded Washignton living in the same place with his wife and father-in-law (age 101). In 1882, the Cochran family moved to Kansas where they lived in Concordia City and subsequently on a 160-acre homestead in Hollis. In 1885, Washington applied for land ownership of 160 acres land near Hollis, Kansas, in accordance with the Homestead Act of 1862. On May 20, 1890, having satisfactorily completed the five-year period of land development requirements, Washington Cochran was deeded ownership of his land by President Benjamin Harrison. In 1900, they lived at 609 East 5th Street in Concordia, Kansas. A 1901 map of Lawrence Township indicates Washington owned 160 acres of farmland in Hollis. Obituary in the Concordia Empire, May 9, 1907: WASHINGTON COCHRAN DEAD, LIVED FOUR SCORE YEARS. Washington Cochran, an old settler of Cloud County, residing near Hollis, died Tuesday at the age of eighty-one years. The funeral was held from the house at 2 o'clock this afternoon with Rev. Elliott officiating. Mr. Cochran leaves a widow and two children, A.I. Cochran and Mrs. Fred Sewart, both of this county. Mr. Cochran has lived in Kansas for twenty-five years and a part of that time he resided in this city. He was a fine old gentleman, respected and loved by all who knew him.
